Tourney to be held in Malaysia from April 16

The road to success for this tennis prodigy from Guntur, was not an easy one.

For 16-year-old Sk. Mubhashira Anjum, now ranked 675 in the World’s Junior tennis circuit, the journey from the clay courts in Guntur to the global circuit was filled with grit and hard work. Mubhashira (U-16) will take part in the Junior Fed Cup set to begin at Kuching in Malaysia from April 16.

She had earlier taken part in the Under-14 tennis tourney organised by All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in April 2016.

Born in 2002, Mubhashira began taking lessons in tennis on the clay courts of B.R Stadium and later under the guidance of coaches such as Sk. Ahammad. She began to show her mettle in the tennis tourneys.

Powerful strokes

Whether hitting ground strokes with ferocious power or dropping the volley at nets, she showed her class early. “She was the pick of the boys and girls and her powerful ground strokes and an ability to cover the court stood out. For a girl of her age, she had an amazing fitness level,” recalled Mr. Ahammad who now coaches boys and girls at Officers Club, Guntur.

Her father Sk. Baji is a small time trader but the family had moved to Hyderabad to enable Mubhashira to take coaching at Sania Mirza Tennis Academy.

Hyderabad:

Tennis ace Sania Mirza on Monday launched the Sania Mirza Tennis Academy’s Grassroot Level wing for players between the ages of three and eight, next to her home in Jubilee Hills here.

The idea was to introduce budding players to tennis, she said. “As a tennis player I’ve had lot of difficulties coming to know what to do and where to go as a child and knowing how much to practise,” Sania said.

“It is actually my mother and her friend’s idea and obviously the Mirza family supports it. Tennis today is too competitive and you have to start when you are three or four years old,” Sania explained. “The professionals, the biggest of champions, have always started at the ages of 4, 5 and 6,” she added.

“We are still waiting for the next Sania, the next Mahesh (Bhupathi) and Leanders (Paes) to come and this is just a small way of contributing to it,” she said adding “It is right next to my house and I will obviously give some time as well.

“The concept is to get as many kids as possible to the academy where we are going to play with soft, colourful balls to make it attractive and easier for them,” Sania said, adding, “At that age, I don’t think they’d understand the concept of forehand or backhand. It is more about fun, enjoyment. You have to get them to try and love the game first before they want to actually make it their profession.”

For this tennis prodigy, the journey from the clay courts in the small town of Guntur to Road to Wimbledon Masters, a tennis tourney for Under-14 organised by All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, is a long one. She will take part in the Masters beginning on April 2 at Kolkata.

Ranked No 4 in Under-14 category and 14 in U-16 category, Mubhashira has been among the 16 top junior tennis players in India to be selected for the tourney, out of which two boys and girls would be invited to compete in the UK HSBC National Finals on the grass courts at Wimbledon in August every year.

Mubhashira would soon travel to Vietnam to take part in International Tennis Federation Asian 14 Championship which will begin on March 13.

Mubhashira had her first lessons on the clay courts at B.R Stadium under tennis coach Sk. Ahmmad during the summer camp in 2010. She later mastered the game in the tennis courts at NTR Municipal Stadium under coach G. Siva Prasad, North Club (Vijay Vardhan) and CTC (Venkat Rao).

“She was the pick of the boys and girls and her powerful ground strokes and an ability to cover the court stood out. For a girl of her age, she had an amazing fitness level,’’ Mr. Ahammad said.

Her father Sk. Baji is a small time trader but the family had moved to Hyderabad to enable Mubhashira to take coaching at Sania Mirza Tennis Academy.
