A Physics Project: Two 11th Graders Build Affordable Electric-Powered Car

Mohammad Sehab Beig and Muhammad Shaan Sheikh, two classmates from Shantadurga Higher Secondary School in Goa’s Bicholim town, were assigned a 20-mark physics assignment for 11th grade. The two youngsters, together with their friend Moun Mamlekar, a commerce student, worked for a month to develop an electric car powered by a lead acid battery.

The car gained attention when it was displayed at Delhi’s Ravindra Bhavan as part of ‘The Western India Science Fair Competition’. The electric car is powered by a lead acid battery rather than a lithium battery, which reduces its cost significantly.

From a Physics Project To Developing an EV

Sheikh and Beig had been friends since childhood and used to repair remote-controlled cars when they broke down, so when their physics teacher, Deviya Gaonkar, assigned them a physics project to build something innovative worth 20 points, the boys seized the opportunity to demonstrate their talent for building things.

“When our teacher assigned us the project and specified that we may design anything related to physics, our initial goal was to build an engine, but we later decided not to limit ourselves to just engines. So, taking a step forward, we decided to build an entire car,” Sheikh told Two Circles.

The motive for developing an electric car aligns with the growing demand for sustainable transportation options, as electric vehicles dramatically reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, thereby addressing environmental concerns.

Mamlekar, whose family owns an automobile garage, assisted Sheikh and Beig with the technical aspects of the project. 

They showed the model to their teacher, Goankar, and after receiving a positive response, they began collecting the parts and materials required to build the car. 

Specifications of the Electric Car

After working tirelessly for a month, the duo completed the automobile, which includes a brushless DC motor that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy and a 48-volt lead-acid battery system connected in series with four 12-volt batteries. Its standout feature is its strong load-bearing capacity, which can support up to one tonne of weight. 

Charging the vehicle is achieved by connecting it to a power source compatible with the lead-acid battery setup. While charging periods may be longer than with advanced lithium-ion batteries, the lead-acid configuration remains a practical option. In terms of speed, the automobile can reach a maximum of 60-70 kilometers per hour, demonstrating its ability to cover moderate distances efficiently, making it suitable for diverse urban and suburban commuting needs.

Hindrances Along the Way

Building the electric car was a difficult endeavour, and they faced discouragement from others. Gaonkar, their physics teacher, stated that many people discouraged them from building the car, but they persevered and completed it. 

The two spent over INR 70,000 on making the car, which they received from their parents and several well-wishers. 

They have also attempted to raise funds to upgrade their automobile to ones that can be auto-charged while in motion but have had little success. The project is only two alternators away from being self-sufficient in terms of charging.

‘Parents Have Always Been a Huge Support’

Sheikh’s mother is a chemist, and his father is a businessman; both are very supportive of their son’s project. 

Beig’s mother, Mubina Beig, who runs a pre-primary school in town, helped them in finding spare parts for the car. 

“My parents have always been a huge support when it comes to my inclination towards experimenting with things,” he stated.

A Career in Innovation

This is not the duo’s first innovative design. Sheikh created a small solar vehicle a few years ago, while Beig made a generator in fifth grade and a hydraulic crane in eighth grade.

Speaking about their goals, Beig stated that he wants to pursue a career in science and research to enhance his curiosity and innovative tendencies, whilst Sheikh is interested in a career that allows him to blend science and compassion to contribute to the well-being of others.

They intend to submit their design to vehicle manufacturers. “If a compelling proposition arises, we are open to collaboration,” Sheikh said.

Renowned Islamic Scholar and Senior Member of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Maulana Muhammad Farooq Khan, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional contributions to the Islamic literary world. Known for his profound knowledge and expertise in translating and explaining the Holy Quran, Maulana Muhammad Farooq Khan was a highly respected figure within the Islamic community.

Born in Karpi village in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, in 1932, Maulana Muhammad Farooq Khan pursued a Masters in Hindi Literature. Although he initially began his career as a teacher in Azamgarh, his passion for writing and disseminating Islamic knowledge soon took precedence.

Maulana Muhammad Farooq Khan gained recognition with his Hindi translation of the Holy Quran, which marked a significant milestone in his career. His translation made the sacred text accessible to a wider audience, bridging the gap between Arabic and Hindi literature. The clarity and precision with which he conveyed the Quranic teachings garnered him immense respect and established him as a prominent figure in the field.

This work, too, received widespread acclaim and further solidified his position as an authority on Islamic literature. His insightful explanations and interpretations of the hadiths provided valuable guidance to scholars and practitioners alike.

In addition to his translations and commentaries, Maulana Muhammad Farooq Khan penned numerous books on various subjects, including da’wah (Islamic propagation), guidance, personality development, and comparative study of religions. These works not only enriched the Islamic literary landscape but also reached a broader audience through his Hindi translations. Maulana Muhammad Farooq Khan’s dedication to promoting Islamic teachings and his efforts in making them accessible to people of diverse linguistic backgrounds were unparalleled.

The passing of Maulana Muhammad Farooq Khan is an irreplaceable loss to the Islamic literary world. His extensive contributions and profound understanding of religious texts have left an indelible mark on the community. The impact of his work will continue to guide and inspire generations to come.

Muslim freedom fighters to be remembered on Republic Day

With an intent to highlight the role of Islamic leaders in the pre-independence freedom struggle, a group of Muslim youths have decided to organise a function on the occasion of Republic Day, during which sacrifices of unsung heroes from their community would be highlighted.

Besides organising an elaborate programme after unfurling the Tricolour at the Dehliz Chowk on January 26, the enthusiasts will also install banners displaying portraits of more than 20 prominent Muslim freedom fighters at various locations.

The organisers say the gesture will motivate Muslim youths of the region to come forward and play active in nation building, irrespective of their political, social or religious allegiances.

Zeshan Haidar, the convener of the scheduled event, said youths from various Muslim organisations of the area had been roped in to work in tandem for restoring the lost glory of leaders from their community, who had made supreme sacrifices in struggle against the British Government and played a major role in getting freedom for the country.

“Unfortunately, successive governments have failed to recognise the contributions of Muslim leaders in the freedom struggle and a majority of Muslim freedom fighters and martyrs have remained unsung during functions held to celebrate national events such as Republic Day and Independence Day,” Zeshan Haidar said, adding that these names were also missing from history books.

The enthusiasts have shortlisted names of about 100 Muslim leaders of pre-Independence era and portraits of 20 from them will be displayed in the region.

Maulana Shah Abdul Qadir Ludhianvi (grandfather of Shahi Imam Punjab Maulana Usman Ludhianvi), Zakir Husain, Begum Hazrat Mehal, Maulvi Ahmadullah, Abadi Bano Begam, Ashfaqulla Khan and Husain Ahmed Madni were cited among more prominent Muslim freedom fighters whose portraits figure on the proposed banners.

20-year-old Roshna created the longest cartoon strip measuring 430m, titled ‘The Billion Dollar Journey’ honouring businessman MA Yusuff Ali

The ongoing Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) houses two record-breaking installations — tucked away in Hall 7, the world’s largest screwdriver is displayed and right next to it is the world’s longest cartoon strip depicting the inspirational story of UAE-based businessman MA Yusuff Ali.

Both of these Guinness world record-holding creations have been made by Indian expat father-daughter duo M Dileef and Roshna M. “It feels great to be exhibiting here,” said 20-year-old Roshna, who broke her own record for the longest cartoon strip established in 2021 with her latest creation. Measuring 430m, the new strip titled ‘The Billion Dollar Journey’ is stretched across two wheels and can be read by rotating the hand.

On Sunday, the illustrious Indian businessman from Kerala, MA Yusuff Ali, visited the stall and commended Roshan’s efforts.

Roshna’s father, M Dileef, a seasoned record-setter, said this is his third Guinness World Record. “Due to space constraints, I could only put the head of the screwdriver on display,” he said. Completed in March, the tool measures a whooping 6.6m in length. The artist was recently granted a Golden Visa in the UAE.

The longest cartoon strip

The cartoon strip charts the journey of businessman MA Yusuff Ali, from his childhood in a village in Kerala to his meteoric rise as one of the most influential businessmen in the world.

“I have always looked up to him,” she said. “I want to be an entrepreneur; he is my role model, so I wanted to make something to honour him.”

It was in 2021 that Roshna set her first world record with a cartoon strip measuring 404 metres in collaboration with Global Village. This year, she has broken that record. According to the youngster, who recently graduated with a bachelor’s in fine arts, making this strip took her 8 months, five months of which was just for research.

“I had a team of six classmates,” she said. “We had decided that we wanted to do something to make our mark, and this is the idea we came up with. They helped me in the entire research process and aided me when drawing the cartoon strip as well.”

The graduate now dreams of pursuing a master’s degree in Europe and hopes to raise funds for her education with her artwork.

Largest screwdriver

The masterpiece by Dileef was first displayed at World Art Dubai in March of this year. “I wanted to pay tribute to the working-class population in the city,” he said. “No other country has honoured and valued the contribution of the working class like the UAE has. So many lives were transformed because of Dubai. This piece was a homage to that.”

Made out of mahagony wood and mild steel, the screwdriver was constructed in Dubai. The handle, which has a diameter of 70cm, also has storage space for knickknacks.

Dileef has earlier set two world records- one for curating the world’s longest Quran and another for the largest badminton racket.

Muslim Swimmers Saved Around 80 People Who Fell Into The River After Bridge Collapse in Gujarat

As the entire country is still grappling to come to terms with the shocking incident of Morbi on Sunday, where around 150 lives were lost due to a 15-year-old cable bridge collapsing into the Machchu river in Gujarat, the Muslim community of Morbi saved over 80 lives after the mishap. (Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Morbi accident site and visited the injured persons admitted in the hospital).

Among the Muslims youths who saved lives included Hussain Mehboob Pathan, Taufeeq, Saddam and Naeem.

Pathan got a call at around 6 pm that the bridge hanging on the cable had collapsed and he was needed to save people from drowning. Being an expert swimmer, Hussein rushed off to the place and without worrying about his own safety, helped get around 50 people safely to the shore.

“I got a call around 6 pm that the ‘Jhulato Pul’ (hanging bridge) had collapsed and people were drowning. I am an expert swimmer and jumped into the waters and saved around 50 people, including small children, pregnant ladies, and others. I heard that there were around 700 people on the bridge but I don’t know as I was there after the bridge collapsed. I haven’t been to the bridge since the restoration about seven months ago. I gave my best in trying to save as many lives as much as possible,” Hussein told the reporters.

Another Muslim young man Saddam said, “I don’t know swimming so I didn’t save anybody from drowning, but I helped others who were doing rescue work.”

“We have an expert team of 15 fishermen, all very good swimmers, from the Miyana community in Morbi and whenever any such tragedy occurs we rush off to save lives. Our community has saved around 80 persons from drowning in the Machchu river after the bridge collapsed,” said an elderly-looking person from the community.

None of those who saved people cared about the religion of the people they were saving.

Naeem Sheikh, who saved several lives along with his friends, said that one of his friends died while trying to save the life of a person. He said that he and his friends together saved 50 to 60 people.

Twitter described the Muslim youth who saved lives as Heroes.“This is the befitting Reply to Merchants of Hate! Humanity Transcends all Religions’” Twitter said.

ANHAD representative Dev Desai said that while some Muslims rescued the people from rivers, a few other Muslims like Hussein Pathan transported them to hospitals.

Meanwhile, police have arrested nine people from the Oreva group (Ajanta Manufacturing Pvt Ltd) that was given the contract for repairs and maintenance. Among the arrested persons are two managers, two ticket clerks, two contractors engaged by the company for repairs and three security guards.

The bridge had reopened on Sunday after seven months of repairs work.

A team of Indian National Congress leaders like Digvijay Singh and Gujarat Congress leaders Arjun Modhwadia and Gayasuddin Shaikh visited the venue.

“These miyana fishermen community residing in Visipara in Morbi have been extremely helpful to the administration in carrying out the search and rescue activities after the mishap. One Hassanbhai took out his fishing board and fished out around 30 to 35 bodies from the river. He didn’t check whether the victims were Hindu or Muslim and set an example of Hindu-Muslim unity. We thank all these people who have helped a lot. We also want the government and the administration to take cognition of their brave attempts and award them,” said Digvijay Singh.

Sibga Yusuf gets gold medal (engineering) from Goa University

Sibga Yusuf Shaikh, a resident Valpoi town in Goa, has excelled at University by winning the Gold medal in her Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in (Elections & Telecommunication).

Sigba, a student of the Don Bosco college, Maragao, has scored 86.6% and received first rank at the Goa University to bag the Gold medal

She was felicitated on 26 August at the hands of Governor Shridharan Pillai in Goa University campus during the 33rd Annual convocation ceremony.

Speaking with Muslim Mirror Sibga said that it was her father’s dream to see her as a doctor or an engineer.

“I couldn’t get seat in MBBS so I chose to become an engineer and started giving my 100% to studies and Alhamdulillah got excellent results,” she said.

“I used to study 4 to 5 hours daily, going to Margao (about 45 km) to attend college daily was tiresome and time consuming but when we are committed to studies it becomes easier,” she added.

Sibga hails from Valpoi town of Sattari which is located in North Goa district. She is believed to be the first girl from entire Sattari Taluka who received a gold medal at the Goa University in engineering faculty.

Father of Sibga,Yusuf Shaikh, who is transporter felt very proud and said their dream has come true.

Head Master of Unity High school Mr.Ashraf Ali Khan said that he is proud and happy to learn that the ex student of the school has received gold medal for having stood first in B.E. at Goa University.

Ashraf said, “She was indeed a bright student during her school days and performed well in all fields.”

“Sibga was found well disciplined and sincere, established a good rapport with teachers and fellow students. I wish all the very best in her career,” he added.

Sibga was felicitated by SIO recently for her achivement. She is now planning to pursue masters degree abroad.

Inspector Shiraz Khan has received more than 20 rewards for outstanding service at the Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF). 

New Delhi :

Inspector Shiraz Khan, a native of Aurangabad, has been conferred the Union Home Minister’s prestigious Utkrisht Seva Padak.

Born to a middle-class family, Shiraz Khan studied at Milind Multipurpose Government High School in his hometown of Aurangabad. In 1999, Khan joined the forces to serve in Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF) and was first posted at Mumbai airport. Throughout his career in CISF, he has served in different airports in India, including Pune, Raipur and Aurangabad. He has been part of many vital government installation missions during his service. He is now posted in Assam. 

Shiraz Khan is appointed on deputation to Hajj Mission 2022 and is presently in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In 2019, Inspector Khan received DG DISc at Aurangabad airport. He was also rewarded by the Senapati district Superintendent of Police Karthik Malladi IPS for peacefully carrying out the 12th State Assembly Election in Manipur. He has also received more than 20 rewards for outstanding service at the CISF. 

Utkrisht Seva Padak, along with Ati Utkrisht Seva Padak, was instituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, in 2018 for permanent police personnel and other permanent support staff in consideration of long service medal based on the length of service after 15/25 years of service. Inspector Shiraz Khan has been awarded this prestigious award for his longtime service of 23 years with CISF.

Shabnam Khatoon is the best athlete of MANUU; wins cash award

Shabnam Khatoon has been felicitated as best athlete of Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) on Friday. Prof. Syed Ainul Hasan, Vice-Chancellor, presented a cash award in recognition of her all round performance in sports events held recently during Jashn-e-Baharan, an annual event.

Shabnam, a student of B.Tech III Year, emerged as the fastest running girl of MANUU winning both 100 and 200 meter sprints. She also bagged first place in 50 kgs weight lifting event and led the Department of Computer Science & Information Technology girls’ Kabbadi team to the title.

Prof. Ainul Hasan lauded her performance and announced special coaching facility particularly for girl students at MANUU. He also felicitated Dr. A Kaleemulla, Deputy Director, Directorate of Physical Education & Sports for efficiently organizing the sports competitions.

Prof. Mohammed Abdul Azeem, Proctor, and Chairman Sports Committee informed that MANUU has availed the services of well known badminton coach Mr. Ziaur Rahman for the students.  Mr. Muzaffar Ali is the football coach.

Mairaj Ahmad Khan snatches skeet gold

Darshna Rathore had a chance to fight for gold but missed the last two birds and thus had to settle for the bronze.

Olympian and World Cup gold medallist Mairaj Ahmad Khan asserted his class yet again as he accelerated to a smart finish in grabbing the skeet gold in the Digvijay Singh shotgun championship at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, on Sunday.

The 46-year-old Mairaj beat Arjun Thakur 35-30 for the gold, as he missed only one bird in the medal round. He had qualified on top in the semifinal with 27 hits, after having made the final with a modest score of 115, six point behind qualification topper Gurjoat Khangura.

‘’Final and semifinal are great. I am going to work only on qualification for the next three months’’, said Mairaj, understandably happy about the way he had competed despite not being at his best.

It was a similar case during the last World Cup in Changwon, when Mairaj had to win a shoot off with four others after being tied on 119 for the last two berths, before racing to the gold.

Anantjeet Singh Naruka who had shot 120 in qualification lost the shoot off against Amrinder Singh Cheema for a berth in the medal round.

It was Raiza Dhillon all the way as she won both the women’s and junior gold. Raiza beat qualification topper Ganemat Sekhon 36-35 for the women’s gold, and beat Parinaaz Dhaliwal 33-32 for the junior gold.
