A Wreath Laying Ceremony to commemorate the death anniversary of Brigadier Mohammad Usman, MVC (P) was organised at his Memorial in Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Cemetery on 03rd July 2023.
Several Retired and Serving officers including Lt Gen Pushpendra Singh, SM** Col of the PARA Regiment and DG OL & SM, Brig. Rajneesh Mohan Cdr 50 (I) PARA Bde, Lt. Gen Gurbir Pal Singh, AVSM, VSM, DG NCC Delhi, Lt. Gen Velayudhan Sreehari, AVSM, SC, SM, AG’s BR DG (MP&PS), Lt Gen Subriti S Dahiya, SM VSM, Comdt NDC and Maj Gen Prashant Srivastava, AVSM, SM, Addl MS (B) attended the function and paid their tributes by laying a wreath at the Memorial of Brig. M. Usman, MVC (P).
A wreath was also placed at the Memorial of Brig. M. Usman PVC (P) on behalf of JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar (Padma Shri), as her tribute to the memory of the gallant officer. NCC cadets and officers were also present to witness the solemn occasion and pay their respects.
Under Brig. Mohammad Usman, MVC (P) Para Brigade successfully defended the city of Naushera against Pakistani Tribal forces, and then valiantly recaptured the city of Jhangar.
Late Brigadier Mohammad Usman, also known as the savior of Naushera, was responsible for the recapture of Jhangar & Naushera (Jammu & Kashmir) during 1947- 48 war with Pakistan.
The gallant officer attained martyrdom on 03rd July 1948 when an enemy artillery shell landed close to him in Naushera.

It is a matter of great pride for the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) that Dr. Abdul Naseeb Khan and Dr Khalid Javed of the university have been conferred with Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy Award (Rs.One Lakh and citation).
Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar extended her heartiest congratulations to both the awardees.
Dr Abdul Naseeb Khan who is currently working as the Secretary to the Vice Chancellor, JMI has been given ‘Award for Translation’. He has to his credit translations of Ghalib’s Urdu poetry, Premchand’s stories, urdu novels, critical urdu writings and several modern urdu poets. He has also been a recipient of Delhi Urdu Academy award for translation in the year 2018. He holds PhD on translation of modern urdu poetry into english.
Dr Khalid Javed a Professor, Urdu Department, JMI received the award for Urdu Fiction. He has also been a recipient of Delhi Urdu Academy Award for Fiction in the year 2018. He has authored three very famous novels- ‘Maut Ki Kitab’, ‘Nematkhana’ and ‘Ek Khanjar Paani Me’. His story ‘Aakhri Dawat’ translated as ‘The Last Supper’ by Abdul Naseeb Khan is on the syllabus of Urdu in Princeton University, USA. His ‘Maut Ki Kitab’ has also been translated as the ‘Book of Death’ by Abdul Naseeb Khan.
Besides, Prof. Khalid Mahmood, a Retired Professor of the Dept. of Urdu, JMI has also bagged a prize for his book ‘ Nuqush-e-Mani’ .

Professor Shehzad Anjum, Department of Urdu, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is a renowned critic, researcher and the senior most Professor of the department.
Parvez Shahidi Award:
Professor Shehzad Anjum, Department of Urdu, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has been conferred the prestigious ‘Parvez Shahidi Award’ of the West Bengal Urdu Academy for his great work in Urdu language. He is a renowned critic, researcher and the senior most Professor of the department.
JMI Vice Chancellor Professor Najma Akhtar, faculty members and students congratulated Professor Anjum for their great achievement.
Professor Anjum is one of the few prominent writers of the present era whose writings are thought-provoking.
Some of his published books are Urdu Ke Ghair Muslim Shaura-o-Udaba, Ahad Saz Shaksiyat: Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, Deedawar Naqqad: Gopi Chand Narang, Azadi Ke Baad Urdu Shairi, Azhar Inayati: Ek Sukhanwar Shayar, Ehtisham Hussain Ki Takhliqi Nigarishat, Tanqeedi Jehaat, Urdu Aur Hindustan Ki Mushtarka Tahzeebi Virasat, Rabindranath Tagore: Fikr-o-Fan, have been published.
He successfully completed the “Tagore Research and Translation Scheme” started by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India as the Coordinator, Department of Urdu, JMI. It is a historic, exemplary and proud achievement in the field of Urdu literature.
Professor Anjum also authored several monographs including Muhammad Ali Johar, Syed Ehtisham Hussain and Syed Muhammad Hasnain for Sahitya Academy, Delhi, Altaf Hussain Hali for Urdu Academy, Delhi, West Bengal Urdu Academy, Mirza Ghalib for Kolkata and Urdu Directorate. The Kalam Hydari monograph for Patna is particularly noteworthy. Several books translated by him have also been published. He also wrote a literary column on non-Muslim Urdu poets and writers for the daily ‘Inqlab’, Delhi, for about two and a half years.

First woman vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Najma Akhtar has been selected for the Padma Shri award.

First woman vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Najma Akhtar has been selected for the Padma Shri award. Akhtar will be one of the 28 Indians, who will be conferred with the award in the field of literature and education by President Ram Nath Kovind, at a ceremonial function, which is held at Rashtrapati Bhawan every year.
Akhtar (67) who was appointed as Jamia Vice Chancellor (VC) in April 2019, scored a historic double – not only was she the first woman to hold the post, but she was also the first woman to head any central varsity in the national capital.
She has previously served as the VC of University of Kashmir and headed the department of Educational Administration at the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) for 15 years. Akhtar said that she is grateful that her work was recognised and thanked both the PM and the President.
“I will accept this award just not for myself, but on behalf of my colleagues. Everyone works hard, but not everyone’s work reaches the recognition they may deserve. I thank the PM and the President for recognising my work, especially, the President, who entrusted me as the first woman VC of the university,” she said.
Besides her, three others from the field of literature and education, from Delhi, have been selected for the award including – Tara Jauhar, J K Bajaj and Dilip Shahani.

Mohammed Minhajuddin, 26, was writing a paper on the theme of human rights and development on 15 December 2019 in the Jamia Millia Islamia library when the Delhi Police barged in and lathi-charged the students. A lathi blow cost law student Minhaj vision in his left eye; doctors say it will never come back.
On Tuesday, over two months after the incident, Minhaj’s paper was named the best paper in its category at the Jamia Teachers’ Association award. The paper, titled ‘Enhancing the scope of opportunities for religious scholars with special reference to Islam’ deals with the intersection of human rights and religion. The deadline for submission was 15 December, and Minhaj had submitted it just minutes before the police lathi-charge.
Since then, life has been a struggle for Minhaj, but he hasn’t lost his resolve to make the best of a bad situation.
“After losing my eyesight, I struggled a lot to prepare for the presentation. I had to work with just one eye, my head constantly aching. It was tough to even concentrate,” Minhaj told ThePrint.
Feeling vindicated
On 15 December, the Delhi Police had entered the Jamia campus amid protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act . A picture of Minhaj lying in a university washroom bleeding from his eye was widely shared on social media, and several students, including him, had alleged that the police lathi-charged students in the library, a claim the police had vociferously denied .

However, multiple videos have surfaced since 16 February, showing policemen beating the students in the library with batons. Today, Minhaj feels vindicated.
“It wasn’t just me. Several students had given testimonies highlighting police brutality in the library. But with these videos out now, there is no scope of lies anymore. The truth is out in the open,” he said, adding that he was offered Rs 5 lakh compensation and some words of sympathy by the Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Okhla, Amanatullah Khan.
After the video showing police beating the students triggered a storm, the Delhi Police too released footage showing alleged ‘rioters’ entering the library. But Minhaj says the library he was in — the old reading room in the MPhil department — didn’t have any protesters.
“Everyone in this library was a student who had just been studying here. The protesters may have entered another library, not this one,” he said, adding that those who can be seen wearing handkerchiefs on their faces in the video were merely protecting themselves from the tear gas shells fired by the police.
Minhaj is hopeful that with the videos out, policemen will be taken to task.
Not willing to give up on dreams
Minhaj came to Delhi from Bihar’s Samastipur two years ago aspiring to practise law in the capital, and that’s a dream he is not willing to give up on.
“I know life will be a challenge now. But I can’t give up or fall into despair. I have to keep studying and working towards a better life,” Minhaj said, while playing with his nephew and niece at his sister’s home in Jamia Nagar, where he has been staying since the incident.

Minhaj’s father, who is a school teacher at a government school in Samastipur, keeps asking him to come back.
“They (parents) are scared, which I understand. But I can’t leave until I complete my final semester,” said Minhaj, who completed his LLB from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
No help from university
Two months on from the life-altering incident, Minhaj isn’t resentful or angry, but disappointed at Jamia Millia Islamia.
“It is the university’s duty and responsibility to keep its students safe. It failed to do so,” he said, adding that Jamia vice-chancellor Najma Akhtar met him once after the incident.
“She said I can submit my treatment bills to the university and they will reimburse it. But my friends say that just reimbursement isn’t enough — I should be given compensation for the physical loss and mental trauma,” he said.
Minhaj has managed to keep his calm through this entire period, but he said his friends are still angry.
“It is my batchmates who took me to the hospital that day. No one from the university administration helped. My friends took me from one hospital to another, as all doctors refused to check on me,” Minhaj said.
Finally, Minhaj got treated at AIIMS, and he has to visit the doctor every two weeks to check on his eye.
“I need to keep going for a check-up to ensure the infection doesn’t spread to the other eye.” he said.
