Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman, the biggest private medical university in the Middle East region celebrated its 24th anniversary, with a special ceremony attended by Dr. Thumbay Moideen – Founder, President Board of Trustees GMU, Prof. Hossam Hamdy – Chancellor of GMU, Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay – Vice President of the Healthcare Division of Thumbay Group, and Deans of the colleges of the University as well as other staff and students.

“The Yenepoya organization, which backs grief-stricken people and is in the forefront of humanitarian service, is model to all. Organ donation is very important is present times as many are dying due to organ failure. All have to think about organ donation,” opined Bishop of Mangalore Diocese Dr Peter Paul Saldanha.
The bishop was speaking after inaugurating the Yenepoya Nephro Urology organization under the aegis of Nephrology, Urology, Renal transplant and Robotic surgery departments of Deralakatte Yenepoya Medical College.
The bishop further said, “Yenepoya organization has recently given honorary doctorate to president of Gulbarga University recognising his humanitarian service. This is really appreciable. There is a possibility of giving life to five people from a person who is brain dead. Many make their death a fruitful one. We have to learn a lot from the people who are dying. Greek believed the whole world as one life. It is important to save lives.”
Prof Dr Ravindra Prabhu of Nephrology department, KMC Manipal said, “There was time when anyone with kidney ailment was going to die for sure. Very few were coming to hospital with kidney disease. Many have died due to heart attack because of psychological pressure of kidney ailment. Others were not even taking any medicine. Now many are getting cured due to innovative technology. Let the Nephro Urology department which has begun in Yenepoya, give good training to students.”
Vice chancellor of Yenepoya University Dr M Vijayakumar said, “The corporate zone is ruled by the renal department treatment method. The organ donation when one is alive shows the highest form of humanitarian values.”
Seven people who donated kidney to relatives were felicitated on the occasion. Farhad Yenepoya, Associate vice chancellor of Yenepoya deemed university, Dr Gangadhar Somayaji, registrar, Dr M S Moosabba, dean of Yenepoya Medical College, Dr Prakash R M Saldanha, medical superintendent of Yenepoya medical college were the chief guests.
Senior urologist of Yenepoya Speciality Hospital Dr Ashok Pandit, head of Nephrology department of Yenepoya Dr Santhosh Pai gave details of the felicitated people.

Mahnaz Faquih teams up with local charities to distribute food parcels at worker accommodation in Al Quoz.

Dubai resident Mahnaz Faquih, 51, feeds 500 needy people every day during Ramadan.
She started when she moved to Dubai from India in 2002, distributing food during Ramadan to those around her, including the security guard in her building.
In 2018, thanks to the help of her friends and community members, she delivered 500 iftar boxes a day to workers and unemployed people during the holy month.
That trend has continued every year since.
This year, because of Covid-19 restrictions on sharing and distributing food, Ms Faquih joined up with local charities to distribute food parcels at worker accommodation in Al Quoz.
In 2020, she worked with Sahana, a Sri Lankan Welfare Association in the UAE, to help provide meals to those who lost their jobs during the pandemic.
“I moved to the UAE from India where I lived in a joint family of 10 people and there was a lot of Ramadan fervour,” Ms Faquih said.
“For me, Ramadan meant being involved in charity.
“My parents always encouraged me to help others and I wanted to keep that tradition alive.
“I started sending iftar boxes of fruit, laban or juice to my local mosque,” she said.

Ms Faquih, an interior designer, said she ensured her children understood the importance of giving while realising their own privilege.
“The initiative has grown so big. It started with a wish to treat others to some good food or a box of biryani,” Ms Faquih said.
“Before the pandemic, I asked my children to give away the food packets so that it touched their hearts.
“I wanted them to have the consciousness that others are needy and they are privileged.
“My parents always gave away money or gifts through us, and I wanted my children to think about others.”
Her daughter, Alina Shaikh, 16, has been helping her mother since she was six and her son, Mikhail Shaikh, 12, also helps to distribute boxes.
“When we were little, we used to bring food and juices to workers every single day during Ramadan,” Alina said.
“We feel happy and grateful that we are lucky enough to help others.
“It’s such an amazing and rewarding feeling.
“It’s allowed us to understand how others live and empathise with them. It has helped us become humble and open-minded to people from different walks of life,” she said.
Mikhail also enjoyed being able to help others.
“In the past, we helped in packing the food boxes, but most of the time we handed out the iftar meals to people,” he said.
“We think that giving back is extremely important and when you have the ability to help others, why not do it?”
Ms Faquih said her friends supported her, too.
Shanu Hathiramani, an Indian from Nigeria living in Dubai, has known Ms Faquih for the past eight years and often helps her with her charitable work.
“Mahnaz is a very giving and helpful person,” Ms Hathiramani said.
“In the past, we have helped feed people during Ramadan. My son also helped out with the charity work.”

Deputy commissioner Dr Kumar announced the list of Rajyotsava awardees of Dakshina Kannada district on Sunday, October 30.

Vartha Bharati Journalist Shamsuddin Enmuru was on Sunday conferred the BG Mohan Das Award for Best Report on Digital Media for the year 2022. The award is presented collaboratively by Gulfkannada.com and Nirat Sahitya Sampad in honor of senior journalist BG Mohan Das.
The award was conferred during a ceremony held at Kannada Bhavan here in the city’s BC road.
Speaking after receiving the award, Shamsuddin said said that the Koraga community, the original inhabitants of the country, are still struggling to live up to their self-esteem and to come into the mainstream of society.
“Deprived of basic amenities, human rights, owing to superstition, bigotry, untouchability. An entire community is on the brink of extinction. My report was a small attempt to bring their plight to the notice of the government. I am glad that people took note of it and it was selected for this prestigious award.” Shamsuddin said.
“I am Thankful to Niratha Sahitya Sampada and Gulf Kannadiga.com team for selecting my report for the award. I am also thankful to the Vartha Bharati team for supporting and encouraging me in my career. With this award I feel I have increased responsibilities now,” he added.

Navabharat Night High School, considered the first night school in the country, has been serving society for last 8 decades.

As a high school boy, Khalid Mohammed used to often find illiterate people knocking on his doors to read letters for them. The visitors were mostly elderly and disadvantaged whose children had migrated from Mangaluru to Mumbai and elsewhere in search of greener pastures.
It was then that the young Khalid, motivated by Mahatma Gandhi’s call for adult education movement, decided to teach such people how to read and write. Mohammed, a tin maker in the neighbourhood who was also not educated, was generous enough to spare his courtyard for a few hours each day for the noble cause.
Five adults — Khader, Krishna, Kusappa, Rahiman and Mohammed himself — were the first students when the night school came into existence on March 15, 1943.
Buoyed by the good response, the next year Khalid started primary classes in a building opposite KRK Shet Building on BEM High School Road in Mangaluru and named it Noubahar Night School. Gradually, middle and high school classes were added. Later, during its golden jubilee celebration in 1992, the school managed to get its own three-storeyed building on Car Street.
Called Navabharat Night High School now, it is run by the Navabharat Education Society. Said to be the first night school in the country and the only one still functioning, it is celebrating 80 years of its existence this year. Khalid, who was an English teacher at Badriya High School for a while, later became the headmaster of the night school and continued in the same post till he passed away a few years ago. The school, which does not charge any fee from students, has seen a lot of transformation over the last eight decades.
During its initial years, the school got a stream of adults who did not know how to read or write. Later it started getting adults who had dropped out of schools due to financial constraints but wanted to complete their schooling to get a job or promotion. Those who study here write the SSLC examination by enrolling as private candidates.
The institution now has over 60 students, who are mostly children of labourers. Almost all these kids go to day schools, but also come to the night school as their parents are away at work in the evenings.
Dr Vaman Shenoy, president of the Navabharat Education Society, beams with pride when he says many students from here have gone on to become doctors, engineers, advocates and also are employed abroad. There was a time when the school used to brim with 250-300 students, who used to stand outside the doors and windows of classrooms to listen to lectures. Bicycles used to be parked on both sides of the narrow road in front of the school building in Bunder.
The school has not received any government grant since its inception and runs only on donations. “Our founder Khalid Mohammed’s son Dr AR Nazeer who is a professor at a university in Saudi Arabia, Dr Vinay Hegde of Nitte, Kind Foundation, Canara Foundation and others contribute to the cause,” said M Ramachandra, secretary of the Society. Ramachandra himself was a student at the school. He later became its manager before he became secretary. “I dropped out of school after Class 8 because of poverty. After a gap of five years, I joined the night school,” he says.
The free school has six teachers and two office staff. Dinesh Kumar, a clerk at Canara College, has been teaching at the night school for the last 25 years. “I wanted to contribute something for society and that is the reason I am here,” he says. He teaches at the school from 6 am to 8.30 pm. Varkady Ravi Alevoorya, the present headmaster, says they have not kept the count of the total number of students educated in the school, but it could be in thousands.
“The student strength has dwindled over the last few years as the government now lays a lot of stress on education and makes regular follow-ups on absentee students to bring them back. But we still keep our doors open as there may be people who still need our help,” he adds. The school has a computer centre and also teaches Yakshagana. Dr AR Naseer says the school belongs to the public and they need to take it forward.
“As a teenager, my father was drawn to Mahatma Gandhi’s adult education movement which led him to start this school. It was the first home for my father and he used to spend most of his time here,” he recalls.
