Telangana boxer from Nizamabad Mohammed Hussamuddin on Wednesday has been nominated for the Arjuna Award while shuttlers Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty duo were selected for the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
Hussamuddin is a two-time bronze medal winner from Commonwealth Games from 2018 Gold Cost and 2022 Birmingham. He also won bronze each at World Championships in 2023 and Asian Championships in 2022.
Other sportspersons to be nominated for the Arjuna Award include men’s hockey players Krishan Bahadur Pathak and Sushila Chanu, archers Ojas Pravin Deotale and Aditi Gopichand Swami, chess player R Vaishali, golfer Diksha Dagar, shooter Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, wrestler Antim Panghal, Asian Games silver medallist wushu player Naorem Roshibina Devi and paddler Ayhika Mukherjee among others.

Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami was on Tuesday conferred with the Arjuna Award by President Droupadi Murmu in a regal ceremony. In the ceremony, other best-performing athletes were also conferred with the national sports awards by the President.

Shuttlers Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy were presented the coveted Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award for a breakout 2023, during which they won their maiden Asian Games gold — a first for India in badminton –, while also clinching the Asian Championships title and the Indonesia Open Super 1000 title.
The awards ceremony, usually held on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, was deferred because of the Hangzhou Asian Games from September 23 till October 8 last year.
An atmosphere of gaiety pervaded the Rashtrapati Bhawan as 26 athletes and para-athletes were conferred the Arjuna Awards.
Also receiving a huge round of applause was the newly-crowned chess Grandmaster R. Vaishali, the elder sister of precocious chess talent R. Praggnanandhaa.
Vaishali was honoured for becoming the third woman from the country after Koneru Humpy and Dronavalli Harika to turn GM.
Pistol shooting sensation, 19-year-old Esha Singh, was among the notable absentees as she is competing in the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Jakarta.
Apart from Mohammed Shami, other sporting bigwigs who were chosen for the Arjuna award this year were wrestler Antim Panghal, a former junior world champion and bronze-winner at the senior event last year, boxer Mohammad Hussamuddin (bronze-winner at last year’s world championship), and para archer Sheetal Devi.
Among the notable Dronacharya awardees this year is chess coach RB Ramesh, who has groomed Praggnanandhaa.
While the Khel Ratna comes with a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh, the Arjuna and Dronacharya awards include a cash prize of Rs 15 lakh.

Dhyan Chand Award for lifetime achievement: Manjusha Kanwar (badminton), Vineet Kumar Sharma (hockey), Kavitha Selvaraj (kabaddi).
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy 2023: Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar (overall winner university); Lovely Professional University, Punjab (1st runner -up), Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra (2nd runner-up).
Mohammed Shami may miss two Tests against England: Reports
Meanwhile, Mohammad Shami is likely to miss the first two matches of the upcoming five-Test series against England, set to commence on January 25, as the pacer is yet to resume bowling following an ankle injury, say reports.
He has not started bowling, and he will need to go to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to demonstrate his fitness, according to Indian Express report.
Mohammed Shami was included in the Test squad against South Africa but his availability was subject to fitness. The BCCI later in a press release stated that Shami has not been cleared by the Medical Team and the fast bowler was ruled out of the two Tests.

India’s Mohammed Hussamuddin finished his IBA World Boxing Championships campaign in Tashkent, Uzbekistan with a bronze medal on Friday.
Hussamuddin was forced to give a walkover to Horta Rodriguez Del-Rey of Cuba in the 54-57kg semifinals due to a knee injury sustained during his quarterfinal bout, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) said in a tweet.
Against a taller opponent landing blows from a long range, the Indian southpaw connected a few headshots to claim the first round 3-2.
Hussamuddim relied on his ring craft to stay marginally ahead in the second period and matched the Bulgarian in the physical third round, which witnessed both going all out, to emerge triumphant.
The Haryana boxer defeated Russia’s Eduard Savvin in the pre-quarters.

Hailing from a family of boxers, Mohammed Hussamuddin is the youngest of six brothers, four of whom are seriously entrenched in the sport. Hussamuddin, whose role model is Vasyl Lomachenko, two-time Olympic Champion, was afraid to don the gloves until his father and coach, Mohammad Shamsuddin, got him to shed that fear and trained him at the Collectorate grounds in Nizamabad, north Telangana.
Commonwealth Games champion Hussamuddin had upset fifth-seeded Bulgarian Javier Ibanez Diaz 4-3, via bout review, in a closely-contested fight in the quarterfinals.
The 29-year-old went on to outshine his siblings and established himself in the state-level competitions before moving on to the national scene, making his debut in the 2009 junior Nationals at Aurangabad, claiming bronze. He turned it into gold in his debut at the senior nationals.
The boxer’s potential was spotted early and in 2011, he was sent to a fortnight-long stint of training and competition to Havana, Cuba, before participating in the 2012 Tammer Tournament in Finland and later in the Youth World Championship in Yerevan, Armenia.
His barren-run on the international stage ended with bronze at the 2015 Military World Games. Since then, he has been on the up and today he has evolved into one of the finest boxers in the country in his weight category.
With a bronze in Commonwealth Games 2018 and a gold in the Chemistry Cup, Hussamuddin continued to shine and bag silver at the Gee Bee Boxing Tournament in 2019. He won silver at the Boxam International in march 2021 and finished 2022 with bronze medal at CWG and Asian Championships.

Mohammad Hussamuddin from Nizamabad has become the first-ever boxer to win an individual medal (bronze in 56 kg) from Telangana in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast on Friday.
The success story of Hussamuddin is another gentle reminder of the abundance of talent in the State that badly needs to be nurtured. The gifted pugilist, the youngest of six bothers, was lucky in a way to be mentored by his father Mohammad Samsamuddin himself. He is the same person who also groomed woman boxer Nikhat Zareen (former World Youth gold medallist) in her formative years in Nizamabad.
“We are delighted that he is the first boxer from Telangana to achieve this. We knew it was coming, but were hoping for a much better performance,” exclaimed the proud father.
For someone who made an impact in the 2011 Youth Nationals with a silver and clinched a gold in his maiden Senior Nationals last year, Hussamuddin has always been tipped as one of the potential champions by SATS coach Omkar Yadav, who had seen his progress since childhood.
But what clearly changed his career graph for the good was when he joined the 1 EME Centre before moving over to the famed Army Sports Institute in Pune to be trained by Narender Rana and Kuttappa later.
Naturally, 24-year-old Hussamuddin is pleased, if not overjoyed, with his bronze in the ring on Friday. “I was targeting gold, but had to be content with bronze. Anyhow, this will remain a huge inspirational moment for me as I prepare for the bigger events later this year, including the Asian Games,” was what the boxer conveyed to SATS Chairman A. Venkateshwar Reddy, who was there to cheer the boxer.
“No doubt this is the beginning of a new chapter in my career and I am hopeful of winning in bigger events given the kind of motivation I get from this one,” was his message from Gold Coast when the SATS official made it a point to personally congratulate him.
