Darshna Rathore had a chance to fight for gold but missed the last two birds and thus had to settle for the bronze.

Olympian and World Cup gold medallist Mairaj Ahmad Khan asserted his class yet again as he accelerated to a smart finish in grabbing the skeet gold in the Digvijay Singh shotgun championship at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, on Sunday.

The 46-year-old Mairaj beat Arjun Thakur 35-30 for the gold, as he missed only one bird in the medal round. He had qualified on top in the semifinal with 27 hits, after having made the final with a modest score of 115, six point behind qualification topper Gurjoat Khangura.

‘’Final and semifinal are great. I am going to work only on qualification for the next three months’’, said Mairaj, understandably happy about the way he had competed despite not being at his best.

It was a similar case during the last World Cup in Changwon, when Mairaj had to win a shoot off with four others after being tied on 119 for the last two berths, before racing to the gold.

Anantjeet Singh Naruka who had shot 120 in qualification lost the shoot off against Amrinder Singh Cheema for a berth in the medal round.

It was Raiza Dhillon all the way as she won both the women’s and junior gold. Raiza beat qualification topper Ganemat Sekhon 36-35 for the women’s gold, and beat Parinaaz Dhaliwal 33-32 for the junior gold.

Angad Bajwa, Mairaj Khan add to India’s Olympic quota places

Their medals ensured India secured a record 15 quota places for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, easily surpassing the 12 for the 2016 Rio Games and 11 for London 2012.

Gold medallist Angad Vir Singh Bajwa and silver winner Mairaj Ahmad Khan added to India’s rich Olympic quota haul with a sensational 1-2 finish in the men’s skeet event at the 14th Asian Championships on Sunday.

Their medals ensured India secured a record 15 quota places for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, easily surpassing the 12 for the 2016 Rio Games and 11 for London 2012.

There was a shoot-off for the gold medal and Bajwa prevailed 6-5 against his compatriot after both were tied on 56 at the Lusail Shooting Complex.

India won three quotas on Sunday, including teenager Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar’s bronze in men’s 50m rifle 3 positions.

Meanwhile, continuing India’s impressive performance at the prestigious championships, the duo of Manu Bhaker and Abhishek Verma got the better of compatriots Saurabh Chaudhary and Yashaswini Singh Deswal 16-10 to win the gold medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event.

Bhaker and Verma shot 577 and 387 in the two qualifications, while Chaudhary and Deswal managed 576 and 387.

Before India’s exploits in the mixed event, the 18-year-old Tomar shot 449.1 in the eight-man final to finish third on the podium, behind gold medallist Kim Jonghyun (459.9) of Korea and Chinese Zhonghao Zhao (459.1).

Mairaj emerged victorious after edging out youngster Angad Vir Singh Bajwa of Punjab 26-25 in a marathon shoot-off.

India’s top Skeet shooter, Mairaj Ahmad Khan, was on Saturday crowned national champion after a marathon final at New Delhi’s Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range on the concluding day of the 61st National Shooting Championship Competitions for Shotgun events.

In a battle between India’s present and future of Men’s Skeet shooting, Mairaj, representing Uttar Pradesh (UP) and youngster Angad Vir Singh Bajwa of Punjab, were engaged in a grueling battle for top honours as both recorded 57 out of 60 hits in the final and then went through a marathon shoot-off before Mairaj came through 26-25 to clinch gold. Man Singh of Haryana won the Bronze with a score of 46 in the finals.

Earlier in qualification, Angad topped the field with a high score of 123 out of 125 while Mairaj was third among six to qualify with a score of 122. Angad however won the Team gold in the event, combining with Amarinder Cheema and Sukhbir Singh Harika for a total of 356, ahead of Haryana’s 351.

Mairaj and his UP team won Bronze with a combined total of 348.

There was another shoot-off to determine the winner of the gold medal in the Junior Men’s Skeet, where Chattisgarh’s Mohammad Hamza Sheikh prevailed over Punjab’s Gurnihal Singh Garcha 7-6 after both were tied on 53 hits.

Ayush Rudraraju of Tripura won Bronze recording 38 hits in the final.

Just like Angad in Men’s Skeet, Gurnihal did manage to win the Junior Team Gold with his Punjab teammates Abinash Pratap Singh Sidhu and Indereshwar Singh Sekhon recording a combined total of 336, ahead of second placed Rajasthan with 326 and third placed Madhya Pradesh with 285.
