Hima Das and Muhammed Anas won a silver medal each in women’s and men’s 400m on Day eight of Asian Games 2018, continuing India’s strong show at the tournament in athletics.

Hima Das and Muhammed Anas won a silver medal each in women’s and men’s 400m on Day eight of Asian Games 2018, continuing India’s strong show at the tournament.

Hima beat her own national record in two days as she clocked 50.59 seconds to win the silver, behind Bahrain’s Salwa Naser who won the gold in a new Games record time 50.09 seconds. She had qualified for the final with a national record time 51.00 seconds on Saturday, bettering the 14-year-old mark set by Manjeet Kaur (51.05) in Chennai in 2004.

Asian champion Anas also settled with a silver in the men’s 400m final as he timed 45.69 seconds, behind Asian season leader and 2017 World Championships bronze medallist Hassan Abdalelah of Qatar, who clocked in 44.89 seconds. Anas, who holds the national record of 45.24, had clocked 45.30 in the preliminary heats.

Dutee Chand clinched a silver in women’s 100m dash to win the country’s first medal in 20 years in this event. Running in lane number 7, Dutte clocked 11.32 seconds, a tad below her national record of 11.29 seconds.

Muhammad Anas bettered his own 400m national record while winning gold with a time of 45.24 seconds in an event at Czech Republic on Saturday.

His earlier national mark is 45.31 seconds which he clocked while finishing fourth at the Gold Coast CWG.

Anas, who is training near Prague along with other quartermilers as part of preparation for the upcoming Asian Games, set the new mark at an event at Velka Cena Nove Mesto nad Metuji.

Anas now also holds the next 3 fastest times – 45.32 seconds, 45.35, and 45.40.

In the women’s event, MR Poovamma won gold with a timing of 53.01 seconds. There were only five women, who competed in the event.

Anas bags gold at Taipei City

India had won seven medals in the first leg on April 24 and six (1 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze) in the second leg.

Muhammed Anas got over the disappointment of missing out on the first two legs of the Asian Grand Prix and won the 400m gold in the third leg here on Sunday with an impressive 45.69s, just 0.19s off the World Championships qualifying time.

This was the national record holder’s first race of the season after he and M.R. Poovamma were denied visas by China for the Asian GP’s two earlier legs in Jinhua and Jiaxing.

“I missed the qualification time narrowly but it will come soon,” the 22-year-old, whose national record of 45.40s in Poland last year earned him a Rio Olympics slot, told The Hindu over phone.

Om Prakash Karhana, also a National record holder, won the shot put gold with a 19.58m.

Jinson Johnson and Asian champion Tintu Luka were both beaten at the tape and had to settle for silver in the men’s and women’s 800m.

Dutee Chand in the 100m and National record holder in shot-put Manpreet Kaur were the others to win silver medals. Dutee’s 11.52s was her season’s best.

Neeraj Chopra, the under-20 World champion who qualified for the World Championships with an 82.32m at the second leg in Jiaxing three days ago, took the men’s javelin bronze while Asian Games bronze medallist Poovamma picked up the women’s 400m bronze in 53.11s.

Anas qualifies for Rio Olympics men’s 400m race

Indian quartermiler Mohammad Anas  qualified for the Rio Olympics by shattering the men’s  400m national record  on the second day of  Polish Athletics Championship  at Bydgoszcz.

21-year-old Anas clocked 45.40secs, the exact Rio qualification timing, to book the Olympics ticket last night and become the 21st Indian track and field athlete to qualify for the upcoming Games.

The Kerala athlete shattered his own national record of 45.44secs which he set on Friday on the first day of the same competition at this Polish city.

Rajiv Arokia, whose national record of 45.47secs Anas broke on Friday, finished second with a timing of 45.60secs.

Anas had won a silver in the Federation Cup of National Athletics Championships  in April with a timing of 45.74secs.
