New chairperson of Beary Sahitya Academy Umar UH takes charge

Social activist and convener Umar UH, who had been recently appointed as the chairperson of the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy, took charge at the Academy office situated in the Mangaluru Taluk Panchayat building on Thursday.

Academy Registrar Rajesh G handed over the charge of the body to Umar and heartily congratulated him on his appointment as the new chairperson of the Academy.

Speaking on the occasion, Umar said that his dream of many years, to see a ‘Beary Bhavan’, could now be fulfilled as the Academy had a site as well as funds of Rs 6 crore to support the construction of a hall for the Beary Academy. He added that there were plans of providing the Beary Academy a full-fledged museum and a library similar to those of the Konkani and Tulu academies. The decision would be taken after holding discussions with the Academy members, said the chairperson.

Umar laid stress on working in harmony with the literary bodies of other languages and supporting the cultural co-existence in the coastal belt, adding that the Academy hoped to focus on research rather than cultural programs.

Former chairperson of the Academy Rahim Ucchil, Mohammed Hanif, Tulu Academy Chairperson Taranath Gatti and Konkani Academy Chairperson Stany Alvares were present on the occasion.

Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy has chosen nine persons with considerable achievements to their credit in their respective fields, for the honorary awards and honorary felicitations pertaining to the year 2021.

Harekala Hajabba has been chosen for his achievements in the field of Beary language and education sector. Hussain Katipalla, a famous singer, has been chosen for his contribution to the field of Beary art and literary fields. Dr E K A Siddique Addoor has been picked for enriching Beary culture and social service fields.

Honorary awards comprise Rs 50,000 cash component, felicitation, and award plaque.

Ashraf Apolo from Beary music sector, Dr K A Muneer Bava from Beary organizational sector, Mariam Fauzia B W, Beary woman achiever, Zulphi Beary from Beary Youth talent sector, Muhammed Basheer Ustad from Beary Duf field, Mohammed Faraz Ali from Beary young talent sector, have been selected for the Beary honorary felicitation. The felicitation comprises Rs 10,000 in cash, felicitation, and citation.

Academy president, Rahim Uchil, said that the awards function will be held at Shivamogga after fixing a date of the chief minister, Shivamogga district in-charge minister, and Kannada and culture department minister, after the Covid situation eases substantially.

Mangalore University proposes to introduce courses in Beary art forms

The university has issued a notification on January 28 constituting a committee for drafting the curriculum and regulations.

The university has issued a notification on January 28 constituting a committee for drafting the curriculum and regulations to introduce the courses in Beary art forms. The committee is headed by Prof Uday Barkur, Dean of Faculty of Arts at Mangalore University.

Karnataka Beary Sahithya Academy Chairman Rahim Ucchil said that the Academy had written to the university to introduce courses in Beary art forms like ‘Duff’, ‘Burda’, ‘Mehandi’, ‘Oppana’, and ‘Kolkali’ on September 16, 2020. The university has accepted the request and constituted a committee the draft the regulations. The introduction of the courses will help in saving the art forms and promoting it, he added.

Beary is an ethnic Muslim community, mainly concentrated in coastal Karnataka, and has its own language and culture.

The committee constituted by the university comprises organisers of Beary programmes Bashir Baikampady and Ahmed Bava Moideen, teachers Abdul Razak Ananthady, Haidarali, language expert S B Darimi, writers K M Siddique Montugoli and Mariyam Ismail, ‘Duff’ teacher Noor Mohammad, ‘Oppane’ and ‘Kolkali’ artist Rahis, artiste Zulfikar Ahmad, member coordinator Aboobakkar Siddique, Academy President Rahim Uchil said.

The courses in art forms will help in warding off the feeling of inferiority among a few people on the art forms. If it is introduced as a course, it will help in passing on the art forms to the future generation. It may be recalled that the Academy had recently introduced Beary script and numerals. Beary script has 13 vowels, 33 consonants and nine numerals. The Academy had released a calendar with all 12 months in Beary language.

The academy intends to submit a proposal on introducing Beary language as the third optional language in schools from sixth standard onwards. The Chairman said that Beary language has a history of 1,400 years and is spoken by over 20 lakh people.
