9th Anniversary of Millat Times: Prominent figures appreciate its efforts, extend good wishes

Renowned media house Millat Times celebrated its 9th anniversary on January 18 at the Press Club of India. The event witnessed participation from prominent intellectuals, politicians, and journalists who shared their thoughts on the theme, “The Role of Media in Democracy.” Attendees lauded the platform’s fearless journalism, its remarkable achievements, and its commitment to amplifying marginalized voices.

Former Foreign Minister and President of the India Islamic Cultural Centre, Salman Khurshid, highlighted the media’s role as a mirror of society and emphasized the need for independent responsibility. Praising Millat Times for its unique position in alternative media, he remarked, “Millat Times has countered the mainstream media’s negative propaganda by shaping truthful narratives. Shams Tabrez Qasmi and his entire team deserve congratulations and my best wishes.”

Imran Pratapgarhi, Rajya Sabha MP and Chairman of the Congress Minority Department, expressed delight at the presence of numerous young journalists. Applauding the platform’s achievements, he said, “In challenging times when the voice of the pen is silenced, Millat Times fearlessly speaks truth to power.” He urged the community to financially support independent media platforms to ensure their sustainability.

Former Rajya Sabha MP and Chairman of Indian Muslims for Civil Rights, Mohammed Adeeb, lamented the commercialization of media. “Newspapers are sold even before they reach the readers’ hands, becoming tools of mockery. Amid this, Millat Times lights the path of truth,” he said, commending Shams Tabrez Qasmi for giving a voice to the unheard.

Syed Sadatullah Husaini, Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, underscored the importance of free media in sustaining democracy. Expressing concern over India’s low ranking on the Press Freedom Index, he congratulated Millat Times for its responsible journalism. Husaini encouraged expanding the platform’s multilingual content into regional languages like Gujarati and Malayalam.

Veteran journalist Bhasha Singh criticized the communalization and government alignment of mainstream media while lauding Millat Times for upholding journalistic integrity. “Congratulations to Shams Tabrez Qasmi and his team for their steadfast commitment to true journalism,” she said.

Dr. Khalid Anwar, Chief Editor of Hamara Samaj and JDU MLC from Bihar, acknowledged the unparalleled power of media to shape narratives. “In a deteriorating environment, platforms like Millat Times are vital for representing our voices,” he noted.

Gautam Lahiri, President of the Press Club of India, stressed the critical need for independent, people-oriented media. Highlighting the Press Club’s opposition to government-imposed restrictions, he recognized Millat Times as a standout platform and commended Shams Tabrez Qasmi’s contributions.

Iqra Hasan Chaudhary, MP from the Samajwadi Party, sent a written message appreciating Millat Times as a vital need of the hour.

In his inaugural address, Shams Tabrez Qasmi, the Founder and Editor-in-Chief, reflected on the journey of Millat Times. He shared how the platform was established to address the need for amplifying Muslim and marginalized voices. “In nine years, we’ve trained over 100 journalists and covered issues such as riots, mob lynching, crimes, and elections from the ground. Despite hurdles, including FIRs and government actions like shutting down our Facebook page with over a million followers, we remain committed to our work,” he said. He proudly announced that Millat Times now reaches over 70 million people monthly, with nearly five million subscribers and followers across platforms.

The event’s anchoring was managed by Shruti Sharma and Mohammad Sufiyan Saif, while Ruba Ansari delivered the vote of thanks.

Notable attendees included Mirza Qamar Hasan Baig (Chairman, Jamia Cooperative Bank), Mufti Athar Shamsi (Director, Al-Quran Academy), Mufti Ansar-ul-Haq Qasmi (President, Jamia Al-Qasim, Supaul), senior journalists Iqbal Ahmed (BBC) and Armanlesh (NewsClick), activist Safoora Zargar, Aditya Menon (Political Editor, The Quint), and others.

Kolkata Election 2021: New body to have 21 Muslim members

Kolkata, WEST BENGAL :

Kolkata Municipal Corporation has a total of 144 seats. Registering a landslide victory, Trinamool Congress won 134 seats.

Kolkata: 

The newly elected Kolkata Municipal Corporation )KMC) body will have a total of 21 Muslims members, as per the election result announced by the West Bengal Election Commission after counting of votes Tuesday.

Of the total 21 Muslim members who have won the 2021 Kolkata Civic Body elections polling for which was held on December 19, 18 are from Trinamool Congress Party (TMC), 02 Independents and 01 from the Congress Party.

Kolkata Municipal Corporation has a total of 144 seats. Registering a landslide victory, Trinamool Congress won 134 seats. The BJP won 03 seats, Congress and Left won 02 seats each and the remaining 03 seats went to the Independent candidates.

Among the 02 Congress candidates who won the 2021 local body election and will become corporator, 01 (Wasim Ansari) is a Muslim. Wasim won from Ward No 137.

Similarly, among the 03 Independent Candidates who have won the 2021 KMC election, 02 – (Kaniz Ayesha and Rubina Naz) are Muslims.

Rest 18 corporators have won the election on Trinamool Congress Party ticket. Among them is also Firhad Hakim – a minister in Mamata Banerji cabinet who was also the first Muslim Mayor of Kolkata.

“We should accept the mandate of the people. We also did opposition politics for 34 years but we never questioned the people. They defeated us and we accepted it with a whole heart”

MP Inaugurates Comprehensive COVID Care At Bibi Ayesha Milli Hospital

Mysuru, KARNATAKA :

Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha, who heads COVID-19 Task Force for Narasimharaja Assembly Constituency, this morning inaugurated the Comprehensive COVID Care facility set up at Bibi Ayesha Milli Hospital (BAMH) on Old Mysuru-Bengaluru Road. The Hospital has been converted into a modern 75-bed hospital and can be extended to 100 beds. 

Bibi Ayesha Milli Hospital has tied up with Brindavan Hospital for this initiative and the facility will be entirely managed by Brindavan Hospital. It has facilities including Intensive Care Units, Surgery and Haemodialysis, ventilator support and even can handle child birth cases of COVID-infected pregnant women.

The Brindavan Hospital and the Bibi Ayesha Milli Hospital will be treated as one hospital and as the State Government has mandated all Private Hospitals in the State to hand over their 50 percent of the beds to COVID care, all the beds at Bibi Ayesha Milli Hospital will be reserved for COVID patients and all the non-COVID patients will be treated at Brindavan Hospital.

A team of specialist doctors, technicians and paramedical staff will run the Hospital with utmost precautions to help the District Administration in its efforts to control the pandemic. Bibi Ayesha Milli Hospital President Iqbal Ahmed, Dr. M.R. Aiyappa, General Physician and Diabetologist and Dr. Ravindranath, Orthopaedician at Brindavan Hospital, Dr. K. Javed Nayeem, Dr. Mohan, Dr. Imran and others were present.

Disinfectant tunnel 

On the occasion, a unique disinfectant tunnel was inaugurated by the MP where liquid is not sprayed on the entrants but are fumigated with thick smoke. The smoke is, however safe to inhale. The tunnel has been installed by S3V Technologies and is called ‘3V Safe Tunnel’. Impressed by the tunnel, MP Pratap Simha asked the company representatives to demonstrate the tunnel to Deputy Commissioner Abhiram G. Sankar so that such facilities can be installed at all the other COVID Care Centres, and hospitals.

Protest held, withdrawn 

A group of five to six people claiming to be members of Waqf Board in Mysuru objected to the conversion of Bibi Ayesha Milli Hospital into a COVID Hospital. Claiming to be the owners of the building and the property where the hospital stands, the members protested. They objected for the commercial use of the Hospital and at the same time said that the hospital is located in a thickly populated area and there is a danger of virus spreading. 

Narasimharaja Sub-Division ACP Shivashankar, Inspector Shekhar and Pratap Simha intervened in the protest and asked the Waqf Board members to withdraw the stir. They told the protesters that real estate matters could be sorted out in other platforms later.

The Hospital has been taken over as COVID-19 is a national disaster and people who object to such issued can be booked under National Disaster Management Act, they said. The protest was later withdrawn.
