GOI Patent for JMI faculty’s pioneering research on AI and Digital Pathology for Oral Cancer Diagnosis

NEW DELHI:

In a landmark achievement, the Government of India has recently awarded Patent
No. 556810 to Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) scholars Dr. Tanveer Ahmad, an Assistant
Professor, and his PhD student, Miss Nisha Chaudhary, from the Multidisciplinary Centre for
Advanced Research & Studies (MCARS) at JMI.

The patent granted on December 24, 2024, recognises their pioneering invention titled “A SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR GENOMIC MARKERS AND DIGITAL PATHOLOGY IMAGE-BASED
PREDICTION OF ORAL MALIGNANT DISORDERS.”

Their innovative methodology, developed in collaboration with partners, leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and digital pathology to enhance the diagnosis and prediction of oral cancer.

This advanced system can study tissue images to identify if they are linked to oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), oral leukoplakia (OLL), oral lichen planus (OLP), or oral squamous cell
carcinoma (OSCC). For OSCC, it can also determine how severe the cancer is—welldifferentiated, moderately differentiated, or poorly differentiated—using AI technology. The
system predicts the chances of OSMF or OLP/OLL developing into OSCC, giving doctors
helpful information about risks. By using genetic markers and digital tools, it provides clear
treatment insights and lowers diagnostic costs compared to traditional methods. This
invention is set to transform oral cancer detection by making it more affordable and accurate.


In addition to the patent, the research team has recently achieved another significant
milestone with their publication in Scientific Data, a high impact factor (9.8) journal from
the Nature Publishing Group. Their paper, “High-resolution AI image dataset for diagnosing
oral submucous fibrosis and squamous cell carcinoma,” highlights the dataset underpinning their innovation, offering a valuable resource for researchers worldwide.

This accomplishment is shared with distinguished collaborators, including Dr. Akhilanand
Chaurasia, Dr. Arpita Rai, Dr. Deepika Mishra, and Dr. Charbel Darido, whose contributions
have been pivotal.


Together, these achievements have significant implications for medical treatment,
underscoring the transformative potential of AI-driven solutions in digital pathology and
oral cancer research, marking a significant leap toward improved diagnostic and
prognostic outcomes.


Professor Mohammad Husain, Director of MCARS at JMI, congratulated all who were part
of the study and expressed pride in the achievement.

AMU Prof. Dr. Farhan Ahmad Khan’s proposed device which enables ‘early diagnosis of rare genetic disorders in children’ gets patent from IPO, UK

Aligarh :

Prof Farhan Ahmad Khan, Department of Pharmacology, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University has been granted a certificate of registration by the UK Intellectual Property Office for a novel design of an innovative device that enables early diagnosis of rare genetic disorders in children.

He said that the design paves the way for understanding and solving some of the difficult challenges in medical science today. The device, when ready to use, will help in the management of rare pediatric genetic disorders.

Prof. Syed Ziaur Rahman, Chairman, Department of Pharmacology, congratulated Prof. Khan on the registration of the design of his device, adding that it is a proud moment for the department and the university.

Retired OFT machinist, son design and acquire patent for device to remove oil slick

A. Basheer Khan, 62, and his son B. Mohamed Imran, 28, of Tiruchi recently received a patent for a device that they designed to remove oil spill from seawater through filtration along coastal areas.

The recognition was given on September 24 by the Patent Office and is valid for 20 years from the date of filing.

“At present, the technology to deal with oil spill on land is limited. Our device uses a low-energy method to draw out the oil contaminated water from a targeted area, and after filtering, pumps cleaned water back into the sea. The filtered sediment has to be processed further for eco-friendly usage,” Mr. Khan told The Hindu.

Mr. Khan, who retired as a machinist at the Ordnance Factory Tiruchi (OFT) in 2023, was interested in engineering from a young age while growing up at Chathiramanai village, Perambalur district. “ I studied at an Industrial Training Institute in the 1980s and apprenticed at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). I used to be inspired by mechanical objects and science concepts to invent my own machines. In 2017, when an outbound empty tanker collided with an inbound loaded oil tanker in Ennore, Chennai, the crude oil was spread all over the coastal areas. I decided to design something to deal with such situations, and started working on the concept from 2018,” he said.

A prototype of the device is available at his home. It consists of a metal tank with two sections for polluted and clean water. The inlet pipe is lined with fine nylon mesh and sieved sand to allow free movement of water contaminated with oil.

During a demonstration on Saturday, Mr. Khan mixed machine oil into water in one section of the device and created ‘waves’ in it with the help of a small steel snack plate fitted to a pulley and sewing machine motor. To guide the water into the filtering inlet pipe, a manually operated shutter fixed with multiple springs is placed at the mouth of the targeted area. In a matter of minutes, the oil and grease were separated from water.

Mr. Imran, who helped his father in research and trials, said the prototype had potential for commercial development. “In the event of an oil spill, our machine can help not only save the environment, but also keep salvage workers safe from direct exposure to harmful chemicals,” he said.

Father Muller alumnus Dr Ashique K T awarded patent for groundbreaking medical device

Perinthalmanna, (MALAPPURAM), KERALA :

Father Muller Medical College is celebrating a landmark achievement as Dr Ashique K T, an esteemed alumnus of the Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprosy, has been awarded a patent for his innovative medical device, the Dr Ashique’s Skin Clamp.

The patent, issued by the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks of the Government of India (Patent No. 548121, dated November 26, 2020), acknowledges the groundbreaking work of Dr Ashique, who is currently the medical director and senior consultant dermatologist in Perinthalmanna, Kerala. His invention holds far-reaching implications across multiple medical disciplines, including dermatology, dermatosurgery, dental and maxillofacial surgery, hair transplantation, ENT, emergency medicine, general surgery, and gynecology.

The Dr Ashique’s Skin Clamp is a sterilizable, metallic surgical tool designed for use in a wide range of medical procedures. Dr Ashique’s journey toward this patent was marked by close collaboration with his former professors and mentors from the Father Muller Medical College Dermatology Department. This spirit of partnership and academic support has been instrumental in transforming his idea into a patented reality.

AMU Faculty Dr Anis Ahemad Ansari gets patent for his novel system that saves RO Wastewater

Aligarh, UTTAR PRADESH :

 Dr Anis Ahemad Ansari, Mechanical Engineering Section, Aligarh Muslim University Polytechnic has been granted a patent by the Patent Office, Government of India on his novel work, entitled, “A system for water and energy conservation in a Reverse Osmosis based water purifier”.

Dr Ansari said that a reverse osmosis (RO) based water purifier used in houses and offices generates a heavy amount of non-potable water which is continuously drained unutilized, although this water is clean and free from suspended matter. He said that the wastage of clean water on such a large scale increases the crisis of water manifold.

He stated that his invention provides a system for water and energy conservation in a reverse osmosis-based water purifier by making a provision for the collection of clean non-potable water generated from the reverse osmosis process. The hydraulic pressure is utilized in transferring this water into a tank and a flow control valve controls the discharge of accumulated clean water from the said tank, as and when required.

“Thus, the clean non-potable water generated from the RO process can be utilized for several purposes such as hand washing, utensil washing, floor washing, plantation, room cooler, toilet flushing, construction, vehicle washing, firefighting, etc. Moreover, it would save the electrical energy which is required otherwise to pump additional groundwater for these purposes,” he added.
