Mumbai :

Fahadh Faasil’s Malayalam feature film Joji has won the top honour at the Swedish International Film Festival, the actor announced on Thursday, September 23, 2021.

The 39-year-old actor shared the news on Facebook, revealing that the Dileesh Pothan-directed film won the best international feature film award at the film gala.

“Good News from Sweden ! JOJI won The Best International Feature Film Award @ the Swedish International Film Festival (SIFF) 2021,” he posted.

Joji, which released on Amazon Prime Video, is inspired by Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth and presents a “twisted version” of the plot filled with greed, ambition, murder and mystery, set in a plantation family in Kerala.

The crime drama revolves around Faasil’s character Joji, an engineering dropout living with his iron-fisted father and two brothers.

When his father falls ill, Joji looks forward to finally getting his share in the property but his dreams are dashed when his father starts recuperating, forcing him to take an extreme step.

At the time of the film’s release, Faasil told PTI that the movie is not expansive like the source material.

“The film’s narrative is not a direct adaptation of Macbeth. We were deeply inspired by it and we were trying to set something inspired by ‘Macbeth’ in today’s scenario.

“‘Joji’ is not as large as Macbeth…The drama happens within the family. I thought the emotions of Macbeth were more relative to the story,” Faasil had said.

Joji marked the third directorial collaboration between Pothan and Faasil.

The duo earlier worked on 2016 comedy-drama Maheshinte Prathikaaram and National Award-winning feature Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum (2017).

Faasil will next be seen in Allu Arjun-starrer Pushpa as well as Kamal Haasan-starrer Vikram, also featuring Vijay Sethupathi.

Fahadh Faasil tells Sundaylite about the influence of Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s Aaranya Kaandam on his career and the experience of working with him in Super Deluxe

A lifeline. That’s what Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s 2011 gangster drama, Aaranya Kaandam, was for Fahadh Faasil.

The noughties weren’t kind on the Malayalam actor — his 2002 début, Kaiyethum Doorathu, directed by his father and acclaimed director Fazil, sank without a trace, prompting him to take a break and pursue his studies in the US. Seven years later, when he returned, it was to cameos and small roles. “I wasn’t really sure about the kind of films I wanted to be a part of. That’s when I saw Aaranya Kaandam,” he shares. “I was stunned; it was such a stylish film. It made me stay (in films). It was crucial in moulding me as an actor.”

Now, life’s coming full circle. This year, the actor, who is in his mid-30s, will feature in Kumararaja’s second directorial venture, Super Deluxe. “Working with (Kumararaja) was a mindblowing experience. It was the best way to craft myself,” he says. The film’s cast includes Vijay Sethupathy, Samantha Akkineni, Ramya Krishnan and director Mysskin.

Breaking with the norm

In the eight years since he watched Aaranya Kaandam, Fahadh’s career has gone from strength to strength. He is a National Award winner, bagging best supporting actor for his portrayal of a thief in the critically-acclaimed Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum. Films like 22 Female KottayamNorth 24 KaathamAnnayum RasoolumCarbon and Njan Prakashan show an actor willing to take on an unconventional script. His ability to ‘shapeshift’ is what enouraged filmmaker Sathyan Anthikad to cast him in Njan Prakashan. “The changes that Fahadh brings to his appearances through his eyes and demeanour are sheer magic. He looks so normal (in person) but these characters make him different,” says Anthikad.

Shapeshifter

  • Fahadh’s ability to ‘shapeshift’ encouraged filmmaker Sathyan Anthikad to cast him in Njan Prakashan. The director admits that had it been a different decade, he’d have chosen Mohanlal. “The changes that Fahadh brings to his appearances through his eyes and demeanour are sheer magic. He looks so normal (in person) but these characters make him different. Remember, he shot for Varathan and Njan Prakashan within months of each other,” says Anthikad.

Quiz Fahadh about the work that goes behind his method acting and he clarifies, “There’s no deliberate effort (from me) as a performer to be unconventional. The characters I portray are an extension of what I’ve seen, heard or read, and so what you see in my films are how I understand life. What I look for in a project is whether the storyline excites me.”

Super Deluxe — which explores the lives of 10 characters — has left him wondering how he can push the boundaries of acting further. “Maybe it is time for me to move to the next level. I need to start doing something new, different to what I’ve been doing so far,” he says, leaving us guessing.

A full roster

Fahadh is generally hesitant to accept films from languages other than Malayalam. The only exception has been the Sivakarthikeyan-starrer Velaikkaran, which he says was a “wonderful experience”. He was to be a part of Mani Ratnam’s Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, but opted out due to scheduling conflicts.

But his star continues to shine closer home. He is shooting for an anthology flick, Trance, directed by Anwar Rasheed, and has wrapped up shoot for an as-yet-untitled flick alongside Sai Pallavi. He will be seen next in Madhu C Narayanan’s Kumbalangi Nights, which he co-produced with his wife, actor Nazriya Nazim. He is also expected to be part of Aashiq Abu’s multi-starrer medical drama, Virus.

Critically acclaimed Malayalam film Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum, which was directed by Dileesh Pothan, bagged several top honors at the 65th National Film Awards on Friday. Actor Fahadh Faasil won the best supporting actor (male) award for his performance as a petty thief in the drama, that also became a successful venture at the box office.

“When I began acting, my biggest fear was whether the audience will appreciate the kind of films I do. It is because I was born a Malayalee, I’m able to do such films. I feel blessed and very happy,” Fahadh, who is shooting for director Amal Neerad’s next, told the media.

“Whenever I work with Amal, something good happens in my life. While shooting for Iyobinte Pusthakam I won Kerala State awards and I also got engaged (to Nazriya Nazim),” he recalled.

Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum was named the best Malayalam film and its writer Sajeev Pazhoor won the recognition in the best original screenplay category. It may be recalled that the film, which was unanimously liked by critics and the audience, failed to make a cut in the recently announced Kerala State Film Awards.

“I don’t expect to win awards while working in films. I want my films to make money first. Awards and all can come later,” said Fahadh.

“I was afraid of the commercial viability of this film (Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum), but Dileesh was very confident and assured that this film will be appreciated by the masses and will become a bigger hit than Maheshinte Prathikaaram,” revealed the National Award winner.

He also added that the film was a different experience to him as an actor. “It is by far the most challenging role I have played. The story of this film happens at a police station. In real life, I have never stepped inside a police station so far. I’m not sure about the future though.”

“I was completely unaware of the way a police station works. But, I played a character, who is a regular at a police station. The director and my fellow actors helped me to understand my character and improved my performance,” added the actor.

“Dileesh is one of the finest directors I have worked with. He will ask actors to suggest what we want to do in a scene and work on it. It makes him stands out from the rest,” quipped Fahadh Faasil.

Fahadh’s hit film Take Off also bagged two National Awards, including a special mention award and best production design award (Santhosh Raman). The debut of editor Mahesh Narayan, which was inspired by real events, had Parvathy in the lead role.

He said his approach to cinema will remain the same. “I will continue to do films that excite me. I won’t change my methods because I got an award like this,” said the actor.
