Quran, Coding and Community: Inside India’s Most Unique Educational Center

Munger, BIHAR :

The long history of social change at Khanqah Rahmani. Where freedom fighters and future leaders meet. Rahmani30 has sent 513 students to different IITs and 838 students to the National Institutes of Technology (NITs)

Munger:

When you reach Khanqah Rahmani during the last asra (phase) of Ramadan, you will find hundreds of people doing itikaf – a ritual, in which faithful reside inside the mosque from the night of the 21st Ramzan till the sighting of the Eid Moon. They pray and fast and reside there only. Mohammed Salauddin, is a regular for itikaf for three decades.

The 64-year-old man remained associated with Khanqah for the last 32 years.

And the obvious question arises, what does he get by giving so many years of his life in the Khanqah?

“Everything,” the tall man gives a single-word answer. And adds, “I am an angutha chap (an illiterate person). For employment, I got a driving license in 1982, and since then I started working for the Rahmani Saheb family. And did other jobs as well but remained attached to the Khanqah.

“Later Salauddin got married and became the father of two sons. Both of his children studied in Jamia Rahmani.

“I became hafiz from Jamia and then did an initial study of Alimiat from here. And went to Deoband for the completion of Alimiat. And took a graduation degree from Munger, MA from CCU Meerat, BEd from Haryana, Mass communication from Jamia Millia Islamia. I cleared state and centre level teacher’s eligibility tests. Then sat in the examination of Bihar Public Service Commission’s TRE2 and became a teacher in February this year,” informs Mohammed Najmuddin, Salauddin’s son. Najmuddin is also pursuing a PhD from Munger University.

Najmuddin is not alone. Along with him, Mohammed Mudassar Usmani (MA, MEd), Akbar (MA, BEd) and Mohammed Hassan (BA, BEd) all are huffaz of Khanqah Rahmani who cleared the BPSC TRE 1 and 2 and have become teachers in 2023 and 2024.

Najmuddin’s elder brother Shahabuddin also a hafiz from Jamia is now an officer in the National Council For Promotion Of Urdu Language, has done a BA from Jamia Millia Islamia, MA from Maulana Azad Hyderabad, qualified NET and done an MPhil from Delhi University before joining NCPUL, Delhi.

“All these were possible for a person like me because of Khanqah Rahmani and its educational centres,” claimed Salauddin, the father.

The history of Khanqah Rahmani

It was established in 1901 by Maulana Mohammed Ali Mungeri. Since then the Khanqah not only remained as a center for societal reform and purification of souls but also helped freedom fighters during the freedom struggle. Freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Abul Kalam Azad and Dr Rajendra Prasad among others stayed at this centre. Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi also visited the Khanqah.

After Ali Mungeri, Maulana Syed Shah Lutfullah Rahmani, his nephew ran the centre. And thereafter Minnatullah Rahmani and then his son Mohammed Wali Rahmani and now his son Ahmad Wali Faisal Rahmani is taking care of it. His brother Fahad Rahmani is the CEO of Rahmani Programmes of Excellence under which Rahmani30 functions.

Khanqah was also been instrumental in establishing the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, which safeguards Muslims in protecting their personal laws and identities.

Who is Ahmad Wali Faisal Rahmani, the present head?

The chief of Imarat-e-sharia and the secretary of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Ahmad Wali Faisal Rahmani, is also head of the Khanqah. He has studied Information Technology from the University of California and worked as a teacher there. His professional career also includes working for Adobe and British Petroleum. However, Faisal Rahmani got his early education in Khanqah Rahmani as he got his elementary education in Arabic, Quran, Deeniyat and Mathematics in the Khanqah. He started looking after the activities of the Khanqah after the demise of his father Mohammed Wali Rahmani.

Whenever he gets time from the activities of Imarat Shariah and AIMPLB, he spends time in the Khanqah. He does not let anyone chide even a screaming child. There are a large number of women who come to listen to him. He prefers to eat along with the students and members as well as the faculty of the centre.

Students of Rahmani BEd College | Arranged

Jamia students hold the Quran on one hand and tablets on other

Jamia Rahmani, which came into existence in 1927 is one of the several centres run by the Rahmani Foundation , a charity body of Khanqah Rahmani. Jamia’s students not just memorize the Qur’an, but also understand it by learning Arabic.

Here, every student also learns science, English and Mathematics as well and gets tablets for their study. They have smart classes too.

But this is just the beginning for the students. The Khanqah has Rahmani30, to prepare for JEE Advanced (IIT), JEE Mains. It has branches in several cities across India. There is also a centre for Medical (NEET) entrance and for the preparations for Chartered Accountant and Company Secretary entrances. It has a BEd College, which has a large number of female students. Jamia Rahmani has added several new courses after 2011.

“When Ahmad Wali Faisal Rahmani became head here, the first thing he did was, start a one-year Diploma in Mass Communication in journalism course in Jamia. Later started two years of Master in Islamic Jurisprudence Study and last year, a two-year course, Diploma in English Language in Professional Skills also began,” said Fazle Rahma Rahmani, head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.

The Khanqah also provides residential facilities to the families of its faculties as well as the cooks. It provides meals to almost 1200 people three times a day. Most of the beneficiaries are the Jamia students and people associated with the Khanqah.

Then there is the Rahmani School of Excellence (where students can get enrolled in a Nursery and study up to standard twelve). In the School Management Committee, Muslims as well as non-Muslims teachers are present, it has females too. And it has a diverse background of students.

“While Jamia Rahmani and Rahmani30’s study is completely free, BEd, school education and other studies have some fee structure. But where there are fees, Khanqah authorities give scholarships to needy students and have a liberal approach to such cases where parents approach the centre. Money never became a hurdle in getting an education from the educational centres related to Khanqah,” points out Fazle Rahma.

Since the inception of Rahmani30, 513 students have been admitted to different IITs in the country. While 838 students reached JEE Advanced to get admission to the National Institute of Technologies (NIT) during the same period.

“Several students of School of Excellence have become IITians so far,” claims Fazle Rahma.

Whereas, many students of different centers of Rahmani30 also take part in the Olympiad, every year.

The Jamia Rahmani’s Taleemgah building was inaugurated by Former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam. Kalam, who wanted to be known as a Professor rather than a former President, in 2003 itself, says a lot about Khanqan’s educational work.

From the stage of Khanqah, the scientist claimed that he was also a student of the Madrasa Board.

However, neither before the visit of the President of India nor after it, did Khanqah Rahmani’s educational works got the attention that it should have got the mainstream media.

Rahmani30 Makes History: 86% of students (176 out of 205) pass JEE mains entrance exam

INDIA :

In a groundbreaking achievement, Rahmani30 celebrates a historic milestone as 176 out of 205 students successfully pass the JEE Mains 2024, qualifying them for the prestigious JEE Advanced examination.

The program, known for its excellence in preparing students for challenging tests, has seen its success rate soar to approximately 86% this year.

Despite the various challenges that have necessitated adaptive strategies in teaching and student support, our success rate in the JEE Mains has increased over years to approx 86% this year. Among the successful students, 9 scored a 99 percentile, while 13 scored 98 percentile, 19 scored 97 percentile, 7 scored a 96 percentile, and 17 scored a 95 percentile. Overall, 128 out of the 176 successful students scored above the 90 percentile. Alhamdulillah. The All India Rank (Category) was 894 and the General India Rank was 3247. The success rate of Rahmani 30 students is 86% .

Maulana Mohammad Wali Rahmani  envisioned Rahmani30 as a bridge to higher education for underprivileged meritorious Muslim students, a vision that continues today. Unlike institutes charging exorbitant fees (₹2 – ₹7 lakhs), Rahmani30 offers completely free coaching for all, regardless of financial background. Initially, with the support of Hazrat Maulana RA himself, Rahmani30 provided full scholarships including living expenses. However, as the program expanded regionally and in numbers, new donors were accommodated, and a temporary financial model was made. The model shifted to free coaching, with financially capable students to contribute towards non-educational expenses (food and lodging). Importantly, the Rahmani30 further supported students facing financial hardship, ensuring no one was ever denied a class or a meal due to unpaid committed contribution towards non-educational expenses such as lodging & boarding as per new financial model. This unwavering commitment to high quality education accessibility has empowered countless students, fulfilling  the legacy of  Maulana Mohammad Wali Rahmani.

Hazrat Maulana Ahmad Wali Faisal Rahmani , the patron of Rahmani30 and Ameer E Shariat for Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, and parts of Bengal attributes this success to divine grace. He emphasized that such historic achievements could only be realized with Allah (SWT) mercy and guidance.

Looking to the future, Hazrat Maulana Ahmad Wali Faisal Rahmani sb is optimistic about doubling this number. In line with this goal, Mr. Fahad Rahmani, CEO of Rahmani30, announced new initiatives to provide academic guidance starting from classes 9 and 10. This early intervention aims to strengthen students’ foundational knowledge and help them make informed choices about their educational pathways in fields such as IIT, NEET, Chartered Accountancy, Company Secretary, NDA, and CLAT. Selection process for class 9th & 10th is in progress.

Rahmani30 has expanded its reach beyond Patna, operating additionally at Khuldabad (Maharashtra), Jehanabad (Bihar), Hyderabad (Telangana), UP (Aligarh), and Bangalore (Karnataka), which also cater to NRI students from various regions.

On this momentous occasion, Mr. Fahad Rahmani expressed his gratitude to the educators, team members, supporters, and the families of the students. He reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the visionary goals set by the founder of Rahmani30, Hazrat Maulana Mohammad Wali Rahmani sb. RA, and called on the community to support this transformative educational mission.

“The utmost service to the religion during these times is to educate our youth and upcoming generations with contemporary subjects while keeping their faith firmly established and their self-confidence high; so that, they excel in religion, are adorned with education, have appreciation of hard work and therefore are able to navigate and take confident decisions in their life.” ~Hazrat Maulana Mohammad Sayyid Wali Rahmani Sb.

Getting medical education and becoming a doctor to serve humanity is the dream of millions in the country. However every year only a few thousand fortunate students are able to realize their dream. Paying exorbitant fees of private medical colleges is not possible for everyone and seats are limited in government medical colleges. So the majority of students ended up losing hope in the absence of affordable resources and start considering other alternatives.

Admission in any government medical college is becoming tougher with every passing year with an increasing number of aspirants and limited medical seats. Its competitive exam (NEET) is one of the toughest exams in the country. It requires rigorous preparation.

In such a situation, Rahmani30 founder Hazrat Maulana Md Wali Rahmani Sahab started this program for meritorious students with a vision of providing free education for all and even sponsoring other expenses for those who can’t afford. Alhumdulillah, the vision of Hz. Ml. Md. Wali Rahmani sb ra has transformed into an educational movement, instilling hope & motivation in people who have remained deprived of such opportunities.

It is worth noting that 19 students (boys & girls) had participated in NEET-UG 2023 from Manipur state, in which all the students qualified NEET-UG 2023, while 11 students scored 500+ marks and got Government MBBS seats in Manipur viz. RIMS, JNIMS, CMC and SAHS which is a huge success. Also 7 students scored more than 400+ marks and got 2 BDS Government seats. Of course, this achievement is the guarantee of bright academic future of Rahmani30 students.

This Muslim Cleric’s Initiative Helped 137 Underprivileged Students Crack JEE

Patna, BIHAR :

Senior cleric, Maulana Wali Rahmani runs Rahmani 30, a movement to provide free coaching to students from economically, socially and educationally backward communities.

This year, the JEE Main results were yet another raging success for the famous ‘Rahmani 30’, with over 137 of its minority students qualifying for the JEE Advanced exams for admissions to India’s premier engineering institutes–like the National Institute of Technology (NITs) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs).

Senior cleric, Maulana Wali Rahmani runs Rahmani 30, a movement to provide free coaching to students from economically, socially and educationally backward communities.

The Rahmani Programme of Excellence includes free residential-cum-coaching programmes for JEE (Main), JEE (Advanced), NEET, chartered accountancy and law entrance exams.

Speaking to The Times of India , Fahad Rahmani, CEO of Rahmani Programme of Excellence, said, “We began in 2008, and till 2017 we have sent 213 students to the IITs. This year’s JEE (Main) results are very encouraging as our overall success rate, including Patna, Hyderabad and Aurangabad centres, is 75% while the Patna centre’s result is 100% (23 out of 23 students).”

The coaching centre which ran in association with Anjuman-I-Islam and financial support from the Memon Chamber of Commerce had coached two batches of JEE aspirants in Mumbai. But unfortunately, the Mumbai centres shut down last year as Anjuman-I-Islam ran into a financial crisis.

Even in the face of the closure of its Mumbai facilities, the authorities weren’t deterred from their will to help students. And so the centre moved to Aurangabad. The programme continues to benefit minority students in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Aurangabad and Chennai.

Rahmani 30 which started with the vision to search, find, house and train deserving students without any stated or implied fees, enrol a student after a screening–this involves a standardised objective written test followed by a behavioural interview for final selection.

Once selected, the students are provided with complete supervised hostel accommodation and nutritious meals during the tenure of coaching.

They are trained with the help of skilled teachers, hired to lecture and demonstrate specialised topics. There is a proper mechanism to measure student progress regularly. Even the lecturer’s progress is measured to maintain transparency between students and the administration and ensure a conducive learning environment. This also helps eliminate any communication issues or cultural misunderstandings and address student grievances.

The students are also thoroughly assisted through the process of applying for various standardised examinations.

As per TOI, over 17 students from the Aurangabad centre have qualified for JEE (Advanced) exams this year. There is hope for the revival of the Mumbai centre nonetheless as activists come together and request Muslim philanthropists and businesspersons to come forward and facilitate it.
