New chairperson of Beary Sahitya Academy Umar UH takes charge

Social activist and convener Umar UH, who had been recently appointed as the chairperson of the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy, took charge at the Academy office situated in the Mangaluru Taluk Panchayat building on Thursday.

Academy Registrar Rajesh G handed over the charge of the body to Umar and heartily congratulated him on his appointment as the new chairperson of the Academy.

Speaking on the occasion, Umar said that his dream of many years, to see a ‘Beary Bhavan’, could now be fulfilled as the Academy had a site as well as funds of Rs 6 crore to support the construction of a hall for the Beary Academy. He added that there were plans of providing the Beary Academy a full-fledged museum and a library similar to those of the Konkani and Tulu academies. The decision would be taken after holding discussions with the Academy members, said the chairperson.

Umar laid stress on working in harmony with the literary bodies of other languages and supporting the cultural co-existence in the coastal belt, adding that the Academy hoped to focus on research rather than cultural programs.

Former chairperson of the Academy Rahim Ucchil, Mohammed Hanif, Tulu Academy Chairperson Taranath Gatti and Konkani Academy Chairperson Stany Alvares were present on the occasion.

Senior Beary Writer U.A. Khasim Ullal passes away at 74

Senior writer U.A. Khasim (74), who was one of the architects of the Beary Andolan passed away at his residence in the city during the early hours of Monday. 

The deceased is survived by his wife, four sons, three daughters, and a legion of relatives and friends. 

Writer Khasim has written stories, novels, poems, and various literary pieces in both the Beary and Kannada languages. 

Apart from being at the forefront of the Beary Andolan, Khasim Ullal has also been a member of the Beary Sahitya Academy, he has also served as the office bearer of Kendra Beary Parishad and Beary Literary & Cultural Association for several years. 

The sources close to the family of the deceased have informed that his funeral rites will be conducted at Kallapu Patla near Thokottu. 

Many prominent personalities expressed their condolences and remembered Khasim Ullal’s rich contribution to the Beary movement and literature. 

With his passing away, one more pillar of the Beary literary movement has crumbled. With his pioneering works in Beary literature by way of novels, poems, short stories, plays etc. he had given a big boost to the movement in its early years, said Umar Teekay, Chairman of Teekays Group in his condolence message.

Beary language gets own script

The Beary script developed by Beary writers.

A script has been developed for the Beary language spoken mainly by a section of Muslims and others in the coastal region.

The initiative was taken by the Beary Sahithya Academy and the script was developed by nine-member Beary writers. 

Academy President Rahim Ucchil launched the script and said that the script has been developed in such a way that it will sync with the Unicode.

The script is unique. There are plans to launch an app to download the script in mobile phones shortly.

The expert team who developed the script are Abdul Rasheed Zaini Kamil Sakhafi, Aboobakker Siddiq, Haider Ali, Abdul Razak Ananthady, A K Kukkila, Muhammed Fouzeed, Abdul Samad Bava, Abdul Rahiman Kuthethoor and Hamza Malar.

Speaking about the script, Ucchil said it has 13 vowels, 33 consonants, numbers, months and days. Efforts will be made to popularise the script using the online platforms. 

Further, he said that the academy has submitted a proposal to introduce Beary as a third language in schools for students from class 6. Once it is approved, Beary language will also be taught in schools as a third language.

He said that Beary language is being spoken by nearly 20 lakh people across the world.  It serves as a vital link for Tulu, Malayalam, Kannada, Konkani, Kodava and other languages.

The academy plans to publish Beary Calendar titled ‘Naalkanakk’ for the year 2021, he added.
