Madhyamam’s editor, V.M. Ibrahim, has been honored with the 2023 Theruvath Raman Award for the best editorial by the Calicut Press Club. The award recognizes his editorial titled “Malayali Engane Nivarnunilkanam” (How Malayalis Should Stand Upright), published in Madhyamam on February 14, 2023.
The editorial discusses the tragic case of Vishwanathan, a tribal youth from Wayanad, who visited the Institute of Maternal and Child Health at Calicut Medical College to see his wife, who was in labor. Accused of theft, he was assaulted by security personnel and a mob. The next day, he was discovered dead, hanging in an empty field near the medical college. The editorial condemns the mob’s unlawful actions and the seeming apathy of the police and legal authorities.
A postgraduate in Urdu literature, V.M. Ibrahim began his career as an assistant executive editor at Madhyamam in June 2001 and later served as Executive Editor of both Madhyamam and Gulf Madhyamam. He was appointed editor in 2021. Ibrahim has also authored “Chekuthanum Choonduviralum” and translated “Theerthadakante Kanavukal.” This is Ibrahim’s second Theruvath Raman Award, following his win in 2021 for his editorial “Manushyatvam Kurisherumbol” (When Humanity is Crucified).
Speaking to Radiance, V.M. Ibrahim said, “At Madhyamam, we are dedicated to giving a voice to the voiceless, particularly Dalits and Adivasis, and championing social justice, equality, and human rights. Our newspaper has earned respect for its impartial reporting and strong stance on issues impacting marginalized communities. This editorial sheds light on the struggles of the tribal people in Wayanad, who suffer under the oppressive attitudes of so-called civilized urban society. Through these stories, we advocate for the protection of indigenous rights and the preservation of their unique identity.”
He added, “I am honored and delighted that my humble efforts to walk alongside Madhyamam in its mission to uplift the downtrodden have been recognized with this esteemed award.”
The award, which includes a cash prize of Rs 15,000 and a certificate, was established by the family of Theruvath Raman, the esteemed editor of the popular newspaper Pradeepam. The selection was made by a jury comprising prominent media observer Dr. Sebastian Paul, senior journalist K. Balakrishnan, and Press Club Journalism Institute Director V.E. The largest Kashmiri Folk Dance ever performed by 10000 young women
In a historic and empowering event, 10,000 young women from Baramulla shattered records by performing the Largest Kashmiri Folk Dance at the “Kashur Riwaaj” cultural festival. Organized by the Dagger Division of Chinar Corps in collaboration with the Baramulla District Administration and the Indrani Balan Foundation, this remarkable event served as a precursor to the 78th Independence Day celebrations. Held at the Prof. Showkat Ali Indoor Stadium, the festival showcased the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir through traditional dances, music, calligraphy, and other cultural activities. The highlight of the event was the collective performance of the Rouf dance by these young women, setting a new world record and underscoring the strength and unity of Kashmiri women.
The event was supported by various officials, including Shri Minga Sherpa, DC, who played a key role in ensuring its smooth execution. Senior representatives from the J&K Cultural Department, Police, and NGOs also attended, lending their encouragement to the young participants.
One of the participants shared, “We’ve been rehearsing for nearly a month, and now it feels like all the effort was worth it. This is a great achievement, and we are proud to be part of this world record.”
The event was supported by various officials, including Shri Minga Sherpa, DC, who played a key role in ensuring its smooth execution. Senior representatives from the J&K Cultural Department, Police, and NGOs also attended, lending their encouragement to the young participant
The festival’s chief guest, Lt. Gen. Rajiv Ghai, Corps Commander of Chinar Corps, was joined by Maj. Gen. Rajesh Sethi, GOC of the Dagger Division, and Baramulla Brigade Commander, Brigadier Rajat Bhatt. The Indrani Balan Foundation, led by Shri Punit and Smt. Janhavi Balan, was instrumental in supporting this initiative, continuing their commitment to development and cultural preservation in Baramulla. An IBF official highlighted the significance of the event, calling it “a shining example of constructive engagement and cooperation between civil, military, industry, and youth.”
The world record, officially recognized by the Universal Records Forum (URF), an ISO 9001:2015 certified organization, was a testament to the precision and quality with which the event was conducted.
The “Kashur Riwaaj” Cultural Fest was more than just a celebration of tradition; it was a powerful showcase of female empowerment and resilience in Kashmir. The audience was captivated by performances that included a Rubab recital by 13-year-old prodigy Ishfaq Hamid Bhatt, the youngest recipient of the Pradhan Mantri Bal Puraskar 2024, and a Santoor performance by award-winning artist Naseer Ahmed Mir. The event also featured intricate calligraphy by the 70-year-old expert, Mr. Shafi Mir, who presented a handcrafted piece to the chief guest.
The festival’s atmosphere was further energized by the “Strings of Baramulla” band from the Chinar YUVA Centre, and the lively presentations by popular RJs from Radio Baramulla. As RJ Harleen aptly put it, “This was a program of the Youth, by the Youth, for the Youth of Baramulla.”
Kashmir’s rich cultural tapestry, deeply influenced by Persian, Central Asian, and Indo-Aryan traditions, was on full display at the event. The festival not only celebrated the valley’s traditional arts and crafts but also served as a platform for the youth, particularly young women, to reconnect with and take pride in their heritage.
The Indrani Balan Foundation has been at the forefront of various developmental initiatives in Kashmir, including the Dagger Parivaar School in Baramulla for specially-abled children and the Heritage Centre at Boniyar. Their commitment to preserving and promoting local culture and history is evident in their ongoing efforts across the region.
The Indian Army’s close connection with the people of Kashmir was also evident in their support for this event. Their collaboration with the community in preserving cultural practices while ensuring the security and peace of the region underscores their dedication to Kashmir’s cultural legacy.
The success of “Kashur Riwaaj” has set a new standard for cultural engagement in the region, uniting the youth—especially the young women of Kashmir—in a powerful display of tradition, pride, and patriotism.

Samina Shaikh and Shabana Contractor studied together while living in the Muslim neighbourhood of Kondhwa, a Muslim-dominated area of Pune, the cybercity of Maharashtra. On realising the poor educational indices of the Muslims in India, both decided to improve the situation for their community.
Samina and Shabana set up their organisation – Future Foundation – in 2016 with the sole aim of motivating Muslim children to attend school.
Both friends first surveyed the Muslim community and realized that students are unable to study due to difficult conditions at home. This, they found out, was also the reason behind the high dropout rate.
Samina Shaikh says, “We met students and parents in areas around Kondhwa. After talking to them, we understood the basic reason behind students dropping out of school.
“Due to lack of financial support, many had to drop out of school. As an immediate measure, we not only helped the students academically but also focused on how to empower their parents financially.”
Sameena says lack of financial stability is hampering a lot of parents from sending their children to schools. She says, “Many parents of Muslim children do not have permanent employment.”
A School run by Future Foundation in Pune
Due to this, there is constant economic instability in many families. To deal with this, children also start working from the early stages of their lives. That is also the reason why there are more Muslim children in the labour force than others.
Their Foundations offers job opportunities to Muslim women so that they can send their children to school.
Often the financial responsibility of the family falls on the husband. If women also become earning members, financial stability will automatically come into the family.
Sameena says that if the woman in the family is capable she can take care of everyone and it turns around the conditions of the family.
Keeping this in mind, Samina and Shabana worked to create employment for Muslim women. In most places, it was challenging to get Muslim women out of their homes but gradually Sammena and Shabana overcame this difficulty.
Most middle-aged Muslim women are not educated. Sabeena and Sbahana face the issue of how to make them employable.
Women beneficieries of Future Foundation’s assitance
Future Foundation found a solution to this. It directed them to pick jobs as household help, cottage industry, sewing, and security women in the nearby areas. Soon many uneducated women were employed.
However, the duo found a few families who were too poor to send children to school. The foundation provided them a monthly financial assistance.
Future Foundation also focuses on Muslim women who face domestic violence and have no support system. In the absence of financial support and shelter, these women have to depend on their abusers and in the process face more abuse and violence.
Only after the situation goes out of control, a woman leaves her home as a last resort.
In such a situation, he becomes the caretaker of her children too while she has no place to go and live. In such crises, a woman needs a safe shelter.
Keeping this in mind, Future Foundation has also set up facilities of free shelter for such women. Women escaping their abusive partners with their children are offered a place to live till their children complete their education.
Future Foundation is trying to ensure that the youth of Muslim community get higher education and the doors of foreign education should be opened for them.
The Foundation also organises awareness drives and camps to ensure that scholarships for the minority community are available to the needy. Besides, it also organises training camps to keep the youth updated about new skills in the industry.
Through the Future Foundation, Samina and Shabana are taking active steps to address a major issue facing the Muslim community. They believe that all barriers to education can be overcome through financial empowerment.
