Mangaluru girl Salwa achieves Ph.D. in research on new treatment strategy for Alzheimer’s disease

Mangaluru, KARNATAKA :

Mangaluru:

Aiming to contribute a breakthrough in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) treatment, Mangaluru girl Salwa has successfully completed her Ph.D. in a unique area of pharmaceutical research focused on developing lipid nano-carriers for oral delivery of an anti-Alzheimer’s drug. Her research offers promising advancements in the treatment of AD, a condition affecting millions globally and growing in prevalence.

Guided by Dr. Lalit Kumar, former Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutics, and co-guided by Dr. C Mallikarjuna Rao, Professor of Pharmacology, both from the Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Salwa’s work addresses the urgent need for more effective drug delivery mechanisms to treat Alzheimer’s beyond temporary relief.

Alzheimer’s, a progressive neurodegenerative disease, has been challenging to treat due to limited therapeutic options, especially those capable of effectively reaching the brain. Her research seeks to improve brain-targeted drug delivery using lipid nano-carriers, potentially offering a scalable, industry-ready solution that could change the approach toward treating Alzheimer’s disease and provide real improvements in quality of life for patients.

The young researcher has a strong academic background, having qualified for the Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT) with an All India Rank (AIR) of 724, which earned her a fellowship for postgraduate studies. She was awarded a prestigious National Doctoral Fellowship (NDF) from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and received intramural research funding from Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) for her Ph.D. research.

Tiger, Tyger: A Tipu Sultan birthday story

Srirangapatna, KARNATAKA :

On November 10, the 274th (or 273rd) birthday of Tipu Sultan was celebrated peacefully in his erstwhile capital, Srirangapatna, amid heavy security.

The date of his birth is disputed – there is little agreement on whether it is November 10, November 20, or December 1, or whether that event happened in 1750 or 1751. (File photo)

This past Sunday, November 10, the 274th (or 273rd) birthday of Tipu Sultan was celebrated peacefully in his erstwhile capital, Srirangapatna, amid heavy security. The security was necessary because Tipu has become, in recent years, a polarizing and politicised figure, with successive state governments casting him alternately as monster and Messiah. Even the date of his birth is disputed – there is little agreement on whether it is November 10, November 20, or December 1, or whether that event happened in 1750 or 1751.

Be that as it may, one well-documented fact about Tipu is that he commissioned, around 1795, the famous Tipu’s Tiger, a mechanical automaton built by local craftsmen using local materials, possibly with inputs from French engineers. It featured a painted wooden tiger mauling a man who, judging from his costume, was decidedly European. The hollow toy housed various mechanisms that were worked by the turning of a crank handle. Each time it was turned, one of the man’s arms moved up, seemingly in a (futile) bid for self-defence, while the bellows inside pushed air out of the man’s throat and several openings in the tiger’s head, producing what sounded like a wail of distress from the man alongside a growl from the tiger. Symbolic of the self-styled Tiger of Mysore, the tiger was as large as life; the hapless European just a little smaller.

Tipu’s Tiger may well have been a product of Tipu’s fancy, meant to inspire him after his defeat in the Third Anglo-Mysore War in 1792, following which he not only lost half his kingdom but was obliged to give up two of his sons as hostages to Lord Cornwallis. But there is a popular theory that the visual of the tiger attacking the soldier was based on a real incident that happened later the same year.

On 21 December 1792, so the story goes, the goodly ship Shaw Ardaseer, bound for Madras, stopped to take on cargo at Sagar Island, situated at the mouth of the Hooghly in Calcutta, at the point where the Ganga meets the Bay of Bengal. On the ship was 17-year-old Hector Sutherland Munro, a ‘cadet for Madras’ who had only arrived in India on the 8th of November. Along with his fellow cadets, young Hector went ashore to try his luck at hunting deer, but was unsuccessful. The party had just sat down at the edge of the jungle to eat a meal when they heard, in the words of eyewitness Capt Henry Conran, ‘a roar like thunder,’ and saw ‘an immense royal tiger spring on the unfortunate Munro.’ In a moment, continues Conran, Munro’s head ‘was in the beast’s mouth,’ and it had raced into the jungle, carrying Munro with it. Conran and the others shot at the tiger and killed it, but Munro could not be saved.

Conran’s sensational prose, and the fact that young Munro was the son of the celebrated General Sir Hector Munro, the hero of the Battle of Buxar (1764) and the capture of Pondicherry (1778), and one of the main players in the Second Anglo-Mysore War (1780) against Tipu‘s father Hyder Ali, ensured that the story went viral in England, perhaps even inspiring William Blake’s famous 1793 poem ‘The Tyger.’ Given that his sons were being held in Calcutta at the time, the story almost certainly also reached Tipu. In the aftermath of the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, in which Tipu was killed, Tipu’s Tiger, which had little intrinsic but much emblematic value, was carried back to England in triumph, and installed, in July 1808, in East India House on Leadenhall Street.

Today, Tipu’s Tiger sits behind glass at the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) in London, where it has long been, according to the museum’s website, ‘one of the V&A’s most popular exhibits.’

Bhojpuri actress Sahar Afsha quits showbiz for Islam, announces her decision in Instagram note

Bengaluru, KARNATAKA :

“I have decided to renounce my showbiz lifestyle, repent before Allah, and seek his forgiveness”, wrote Sahar Afsha in her Instagram note.

Sahar Afsha/Instagram

Popular Bhojpuri actress Sahar Afsha recently announced that she has decided to quit the showbiz industry to follow the religious path of Islam. She isn’t the first actress to take such a step as Lock Upp contestant Sana Khan and Dangal star Zaira Wasim also decided to leave the entertainment industry for Islam.

Taking to her Instagram on September 22, Sahar penned a long note that read, “Dear Brothers and Sisters, in the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful, I want to let you know that I have chosen to leave Showbiz and will no longer be involved. I want to live my future life in accordance with Islamic teachings and with Allah’s blessings.”

She continued, “I’m grateful to my fans for bestowing upon me many blessings, including fame, honor, and fortune. I had not even pictured this life in my childhood. I stumbled into this industry just by chance and kept on growing. But now I have decided to renounce my Showbiz lifestyle, repent before Allah, and seek His forgiveness. I intend to live my next life according to the commands and preachings of Allah.”

Concluding her note, the actress wrote, “Hence, I request everyone to pray that Allah accepts my repentance, blesses me with the strength to live in line with my resolve to spend my life upholding the laws of my Creator and serving mankind, and gives me the perseverance to do so. And I hope that I will be remembered not for my past life but for the life to come.”

Sana Khan also reacted to her note and commented, “MashAllah my sister so happy for you. May Allah give u isteqamah in every step of your life. May you inspire everyone around you and become zariya e khair for mankind.”

‘Experience in theatre teaches more than Ph.D’

Mysuru:

Experience gained in theatre teaches more than Ph.D which leads one to the path of righteousness and for actors it is important to be humble as arrogance will lead to their down fall,  said senior theatre actor Julekha Begum, in city yesterday.

She was speaking at the monthly interaction programme Maatina Mane, organised by Rangayana at Bhoomigeetha. “An artiste must live the character on stage withstanding hunger and struggle. It is also important to note that artistes do not belong to any caste, creed or religion. They will have to face problems that come in their way and every house must have an artiste,” said Julekha Begum remembering her struggling days when she faced difficulties to provide education to her children.

Speaking on the occasion, Rangayana Director Satish Tiptur said that arts, which are on the verge of extinction and stories that are stored in the minds of artistes should be a part of the syllabus.

“The interaction programme has been organised to identify and recognise the real stakeholders of art and to bring out various art forms that have been neglected over the past decades,” he said.

Earlier, the programme was inaugurated by playwright Kotiganahalli Ramaiah.

Writer Abdul Rashid coordinated the event. Department of Kannada and Culture Joint Director V.N. Mallikarjun and Rangayana  Deputy Director M.D. Sudarshan were present.

Hands of Hope: Serving Humanity

Bengaluru, KARNATAKA :

In the heart of Bengaluru, an organization known as ‘Serving Humanity’ is significantly impacting the lives of the less fortunate. Founded on September 15, 2023, this NGO has rapidly expanded its initiatives from distributing food packets to empowering and supporting families.

Speaking to Radiance News, Secretary Syed Ehsaan Karim said, “Inspired by a local NGO, Serving Humanity began with a simple yet powerful mission of distributing food every Friday to slum dwellers and other deserving individuals. In its inaugural week, the organization, with limited funds, managed to distribute about 30 food packets. Our motivation comes from the verse in the Holy Quran, ‘…and give food to the poor, the orphan, and the captive.”

He added, “We are an organization dedicated to feeding people, upholding the rights of individuals, and following the ‘Baitulmaal’ culture of Islam. We noticed many discrepancies at some places around us, as these concepts are often exploited in and around our city. Through Serving Humanity, we aim to extend help to the neediest people in and around Bengaluru.”

Every Friday, volunteers target different locations, ensuring that aid reaches a broad spectrum of individuals. This consistent effort has provided sustenance and built a sense of community and trust among recipients.

Soon the organization started assembling and distributing ration kits, which include essential food supplies designed to last a family for a month or more. These kits provide more than just temporary relief – they offer a lifeline to families striving to achieve stability.

The overarching goal is to uplift individuals and families, helping them move towards self-sufficiency and stability.

The latest and perhaps most transformative initiative of ‘Serving Humanity’ is small business empowerment. Grounded in the philosophy of “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime,” this program aims to provide long-term solutions to poverty.

Through this initiative, the NGO identifies deserving individuals and offers them both moral and financial support to start or expand their small businesses. This empowerment enables individuals to become economically independent, fostering sustainable development and long-term stability in their communities.

Vice President Khysar Jabeen said, “The thought of helping the less fortunate inspired me to join Serving Humanity. Each drive brings immense satisfaction, from tackling hunger and covering students’ fees to paying hospital bills, building homes for orphans, and setting up small businesses. With our dedicated team, we aim to achieve even more, In Sha Allah.”

The true impact of the NGO’s work is reflected in the smiles and gratitude of those they help. From the immediate relief provided by food packets to the enduring support offered through business empowerment, ‘Serving Humanity’ is creating meaningful change in the lives of many.

The team conducts ground surveys and background checks to ensure aid reaches the most deserving and needy individuals. Since its inception in 2023, the team has successfully served over 8,600 meal boxes, distributed more than 440 ration kits, provided financial aid for 15 empowerment cases, and covered 40 locations.

‘Serving Humanity’ stands as a testament to what can be achieved when compassion and action come together. The dream is to create a self-sustaining model where today’s beneficiaries become tomorrow’s benefactors, creating a ripple effect of positive change.

MEIF Honored with Kannada Rajyotsava Award for transformative contribution in education sector

Dakshina Kannada, KARNATAKA :

Mangaluru:

The Muslim Educational Institutions Federation (MEIF), a prominent educational organisation operating in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, has been honored with the prestigious Kannada Rajyotsava Award this year.

The Karnataka state government recognized MEIF’s significant role in revolutionizing education within the Muslim community across both districts. Founded by former Higher Education Minister of Karnataka, BA Mohidin, MEIF’s commendable efforts in education for the past 22 years have earned them this esteemed accolade.

In response to the educational gaps prevalent among Muslims in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, Mohidin initiated free English classes within mosques’ madrasas during daytime. The positive reception from the community led to Jamaats in undivided Dakshina Kannada establishing English medium schools within Madrasa premises.

Encouraged by the overwhelming response, Mohidin conceptualized the Muslim Educational Institutions Federation (MEIF) in 2001.

Today, MEIF comprises 180 English medium schools and pre-university colleges across Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, catering to 60,000 students and employing 6,250 teachers. Notably, students of all communities and religions study in these institutions.

MEIF’s mission centers on the belief that education is pivotal for development and strives to empower Muslim community, through education.

The Federation extends guidance to member-school boards on administrative matters and conducts regular training sessions for teachers, students, and parents across its five zones.

MEIF’s concerted efforts have yielded remarkable results in annual examinations, with an impressive 83 percent of students achieving distinction and first-class grades in recent years. Furthermore, pre-university students have displayed consistent improvements in their academic performances.

Operating with government approval, MEIF’s private unaided schools, primarily located in rural areas, maintain affordable tuition fees. Financially disadvantaged students receive free education, while others are charged nominal fees.

Additionally, MEIF facilitates 174 SSLC students’ admission to prominent PU colleges in the districts, supporting over 300 eligible rural students in securing free seats in technology institutes in Mangaluru and Bengaluru.

MEIF has also been instrumental in adding interest among high school students in civil service careers, organizing training sessions to enhance their skills. Over the past three decades, MEIF has played a pivotal role in enhancing literacy rates and women’s education in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Founder-chairman of MEIF and esteemed educationist PA Khader Kukkady significantly contributed to the Federation’s development.

Following his tenure, Mohammed Beary Yedapadavu assumed the role of chairman, steering MEIF to greater heights.

Retired officer Moosabba P Beary is currently running the Federation successfully as its President.

Umar Teekay serves as the honorary chairman of MEIF, while Syed Mohamed Beary is the chief advisor. Riyaz Ahmed Kannur is the current general secretary of the federation.
