On Saturday, the Students Islamic Organisation of India launched the Mohammad Muslim Mentorship Program for Urdu Journalism.
The Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) is offering the Mohammad Muslim Mentorship Program for Urdu Journalism, aimed at supporting students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. The program provides scholarships for needy students who cannot afford courses at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC).
Speaking to Radiance, Imran Hossain, National Secretary of SIO India, said, “IIMC holds a unique position in the field of journalism education and training throughout India. The institution has been offering PG Diploma course in Urdu Journalism for the past 11 years. In 2013, when IIMC initiated Urdu journalism course, it encountered quite discouraging results. After a few years, discussions began about discontinuing this course. Later, SIO emphasized the need to prepare serious and intelligent students for a career in journalism to contribute to the positive development of the nation. In this context, students were specifically advised to undertake PG Diploma course in Urdu Journalism from IIMC. SIO provided scholarships for needy students who couldn’t afford such courses due to IIMC’s fees.”
Imran mentioned that in 2022, four students were admitted to IIMC through the Mohammad Muslim Mentorship Program for Journalism.
Currently, there are 12 students enrolled in the PG Diploma course in Urdu Journalism at IIMC, out of which 8 are beneficiaries of this Program. For the 2024 entrance exam, students are being provided with free classes and guidance through the Mohammad Muslim Mentorship Program for Journalism. Imran added, “We urge you to make the most of this opportunity.”

The Telangana government has appointed three Muslims as chairpersons/vice-chairpersons of state-run corporations.
The Congress government, which recently completed 100 days, has tried to give representation to the Muslim community in the appointment of chairpersons of various corporations and state bodies.
The government has appointed chairpersons of 37 corporations. Three of these corporations will be headed by Muslims.
The government has tried to accommodate those who were denied tickets in the recent Assembly elections.
M.A. Jabbar has been appointed as vice-chairman of Telangana Minorities Finance Corporation. He hails from Kodad in Nalgonda district.
Md. Riyaz will head Telangana Grandhalaya Parishad. He is associated with Kakatiya University.
M.A. Faheem of Sangareddy is appointed chairman of Telangana Food Corporation. He had been serving in the state Congress committee’s protocol department.
Muslim leaders of Congress party from Hyderabad are feeling disappointed over being ignored in the appointments.
The Congress government has given priority to Muslim leaders from districts in appointments for both minority and non-minority institutions.
It may be recalled that not a single Muslim candidate of Congress party was elected in the elections held on November 30, 2023. Moreover, Congress drew a blank in the state capital.
With AIMIM continuing its domination in its strongholds in the state capital, the party has given priority to leaders from districts.
Earlier, the government appointed chairpersons to Waqf Board, Urdu Academy, Minority Finance Commission and Haj Committee. All of them hail from districts.
It could not appoint chairman and members of the Minorities Commission as the chairperson and members appointed by previous BRS government have not yet resigned.
Muslim leaders of Congress party in Hyderabad are unhappy over not being given representation in appointments of heads of minority bodies and corporations. Some of them approached the party’s central leadership and reminded it of the promise that those denied tickets in Assembly elections will get nominated posts.
Earlier, this month the government appointed senior Congress leader Taher Bin Hamdan as chairman of Telangana Urdu Academy and Obaidullah Kotwal as chairman of Telangana State Minorities Finance Corporation. While Hamdan is from Nizamabad, Kotwal comes from Mahabubnagar district.
Last month, senior leader Syed Azmatullah Hussaini was appointed member of Waqf Board and he was subsequently elected chairman.
Moulana Syed Ghulam Afzal Biyabani, Sajjada Nasheen of Dargah Hazrat Afzal Biyabani, Kazipet, was unanimously elected chairman of newly-constituted Telangana State Haj Committee.

The Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, T. Arif Ali released the Malayalam translation of the exegesis (tafseer) of the Quran – “Tadabbur-e-Quran” by Maulana Amin Ahsan Islahi while presiding over a simple ceremony in Kozhikode, Kerala.
KT Abdurahman Nadvi completed the Malayalam translation. “Tadabbur-e-Quran” is a tafseer of the Quran based on the concept of thematic and structural coherence, originally written in Urdu.
In his presidential remarks, T. Arif Ali introduced the writer and delved into the importance of “Tadabbur-e-Quran”, emphasizing how the tafseer expounds each surah as a coherent discourse. Tadabbur arranges surahs into pairs, and suggests that there are seven major surah divisions. Thus the entire Quran emerges as a well-connected and systematic book with each division having a distinct theme.

“A few Muslim leaders say that first they are Muslims and then only Indian. But, how is your being Muslim affected by the national independence and autonomies of the states?”
Hakim Ajmal Khan told this to a gathering of Muslim Leaders in 1920 in Delhi. One of the most well-known medical practitioners of the indigenous medicinal system during the early 20th century, Hakim dedicated his life to Hindu-Muslim unity.
Hakim believed, “Muslim leaders are blaming Hindus for the differences between Muslims and Hindus. Even if it is true, remaining aloof from any development is not a solution. If you behave like this, believe me, Indian Muslims will never be a part of any development. Of course, at times, there are a few Hindus who adopt a discriminatory attitude towards Muslims. You have every right to hate such bigoted Hindus. But, we cannot stall the development of our country because of these bigots.”
Hakim campaigned extensively for cow protection. In his view, Muslims should voluntarily stop slaughtering cows in respect of the Hindu sentiments.
In 1919, he told a large gathering of Muslims, “We are, and should be, fully cognisant of the fact that cow-killing seriously annoys our fellow-countrymen. But before holding out any assurance to them, we must first see in what light our religion views this question. We must also determine the extent to which- “Qurbani ” is enjoined upon us irrespective, of course, of the slaughter of cows. According to Islam, Qurbani or sacrificial offering, is only a Sunnat-i-Muwakkidah (a practice observed by the Prophet and emphatically enjoined on his followers) which Mussalmans, as long as they can afford it, must observe. Now it is a matter of choice to fulfill this observance by sacrificing camels, sheep, goats, or cows, which simply means that any of these animals can be fit offerings.”
At the same stage, Hakim shared several Hadith which emphasized upon the preference of goats, sheep, and other animals for sacrifice. The Hindus, in his opinion, were already trying to befriend Muslims and it was time for the Muslims to reciprocate.
Hakim was the first, and still the only, Muslim leader to have presided over a session of Hindu Mahasabha. His selfless devotion to the cause of unity was acknowledged by Hindu Mahasabha as well. Hakim was invited to speak at its session as a Chair in 1921.
Hakim stressed the need for Hindu-Muslim unity and stopping cow slaughter. He complained to the Mahasabha leadership that their cow protection movement targeted only Muslims while the colonial rulers were killing more cows for beef. He asked them to widen and strengthen the movement so that it could challenge British power as well.
Hakim wrote, “I have no doubt that the secret of the progress of our country lies in the unity of the Hindus, the Mussulmans, and other races of India. Such a unity should not be based on policy, for that in my opinion would be only a kind of armistice….. So highly do I prize this unity; that if the country gave up all other activities and achieved that alone, I would consider the Khilafat and Swaraj questions automatically solved to our satisfaction.”

Ayesha, 31, a native of Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut town was born with a passion for drawing and painting and displayed it from the time she was in school. However, she initially did not regard her God-given gift as exceptional and concentrated on her education.
One day, while browsing the internet, she came across a video on resin art and was instantly fascinated by it. She began to watch additional videos from experts from the United States and the United Kingdom. As she was thinking of trying this craft, her younger sister Alisha Qureshi sent her a video clip of a Rehal, an X-shaped, foldable book rest for the Qur’an made of resin that she wished to purchase.
How it began
Ayesha decided to create the rehal and give it to her sister, asking her to put her order on hold. She ordered the supplies and tried to make the rehal. ” Resin art is not only expensive but also requires a lot of meticulous work like keeping a constant vigil on the finished work to keep it dust and insect-free while it is drying, ensuring no bubbles are formed, no wrinkles are formed. It takes a lot of patience,” remarked Ayesha, recounting her journey from homemaker to highly sought-after resin and calligraphy artist/businesswoman.
Ayesha completed the Rehal by following the step-by-step instructions and surprised her sister. Encouraged by her family, Ayesha attempted to make additional items. Calligraphy was easy for her because of her natural talent for imitating any art form, and she was a self-taught calligraphy artist. With her new pastime, she began creating resin frames with calligraphy of Quranic ayats, bookmarks, key chains, 99 names of Allah, trays, and other souvenirs.
Ayesha considers a wall clock and a key chain to be her best works since she put sand from Badar (the site of the first Islamic battle) in the wall clock for a customer in Bangalore and traces of Kiswah (the cloth covering the Kaaba) in the key chain.
As she continued to create new goods, her expenses increased, and after investing thousands of rupees, she needed to find a way to market her merchandise.
Initial hurdles
Fortunately for Ayesha, her connections in the Dawah group (an evangelical group) were invaluable. And, using the Dawah platform, she shared photographs of her final craft with almost 3600 people from all around the world. People appreciated her art, and she began to receive inquiries, followed by orders. Ayesha began purchasing resin in bulk.
But it wasn’t simple because she was inexperienced, and one manufacturer gave her substandard resin. Ayesha couldn’t notice the difference and set about crafting her work, only to discover that it wouldn’t set and she couldn’t form it into the desired shape. “Those days when all of my work turned out to be defective, I was upset and wanted to give up. But my husband gave me strength. He not only encouraged me but also invested again in ordering the raw ingredients – resin, pigmentation, mould, and so on,” Ayesha explained.
Success at last
90% of her clients are from the Dawah group, and Ayesha feels privileged that the platform she joined to undertake deen (religious) work has now become her source of income. And it is because of their patronage that she can now call herself a businesswoman. Ayesha has a website and an Instagram page where she markets her products.
Her home is her workshop. She leads online classes for girls and women, encouraging them to start their own businesses. She also takes free calligraphy classes twice a week via her WhatsApp group. And girls from all over the world have taken her calligraphy course, where she teaches them how to write the names of Allah.
Ayesha’s support system
Ayesha attributed her success to her husband, who became her pillar of strength.
Her husband, Mohammad Rashid Qureshi, says, “Ayesha is incredibly skilled and strikes the perfect balance between her home and her artwork. I am fortunate to have her in my life. I hope she has more success”.
She also appreciates the ongoing support of Samiuddin Salman, a brother she met in the dawah group who works as an engineer in Saudi Arabia. He not only purchased her most elaborate and expensive work, which cost $1,000, but also advised her on how to promote her items and make other business decisions.
Her parents and siblings also encourage her, give feedback, and inspire her to persevere even when things are difficult.
Future plans
Ayesha hopes to set up a big outlet for resin hand-made artwork so that she may employ more women, particularly her students, and help them make money through this company. She is currently managing everything on her own, including art creation, product manufacturing, client inquiries, packaging, pricing, and so on.
Her advice to those women who aspire to set up businesses is to have strong faith in Allah. “Every woman must engage herself in doing something that makes her happy, boosts her creativity, and keeps her busy. This is also something that will ward off loneliness and depression,” she says.
Ayesha also provides online therapy sessions to women who struggle with mental health concerns.
