Poet-activist Sugatha Kumari planting a sapling during the release of book ‘Basheer Enna Anugraham’ written by K A Beena in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday | Mithun Vinod

Thiruvananthapuram :

The air of an informal get-together marked the meeting held at Manaveeyam Veedhi on Sunday to commemorate the 21st death anniversary of Vaikkom Muhammaded Basheer. A cloth-bound easy chair and an earthen water jug took centre stage while a ripe bunch of ‘poovanpazham’ and a goat perked up the backdrop. The setting was simple and yet richly evocative of the Basheerian cosmos. Poet Sugatha Kumari summed up the spirit of the event saying that the sapling of Mangosteen planted on the wayside was the most befitting tribute to the author who celebrated the equality of all beings in nature.

The meeting was organised by Thiruvananthapuram Women Writers’ Forum. Sugatha Kumari released the second edition of ‘Basheer Enna Anugraham’, a memoir penned by K A Beena, by handing over a copy to author Susmesh Chandroth. The book describes the author’s association with the iconic literary figure during her student days.

The simple nature of the event was thoughtfully orchestrated as it was in accordance with Basheer’s philosophy, said Geetha Nazeer, convener of the Writers’ Forum. Sugatha Kumari remembered that when she sent out letters to writers in the State asking for their support against the Silent Valley Project in the late 1970s, Basheer was the first to reply. “I had written to every writer in Malayalam asking for them to join in this battle to be lost. Basheer wrote back, saying – ‘I enlist my support for this battle to be lost’. He also pinned a 100 rupee note to the letter which had the value of some thousands back then,” she said.

She referred to the recent exhortation of Pope Francis to ‘feed the hungry’ and said that Basheer’s writings echo the same sentiments. “His heart went out to the hungry and the homeless. Nature was God to him. His boundless optimism and humour derived from the superior awareness of a mystic,” she said.

Susmesh Chandroth, who has coveted attention as an emerging voice among the younger generation of authors, spoke about the influence of Basheer on Malayalam literature. “Basheer’s novel ‘Shabdangal’ is a case study in technique and style. I would prescribe it as a must-do text for every student of literature and aspiring writer,” he said. He added that Basheer is a timeless author and is in the same league as the finest writers in world literature. “Whatever age you are, you will find a Basheer story that you will enjoy. Basheerian texts compliment the insights gained at every stage of life,” he said.

B Lakshmi, daughter of Guptan Nair, shared her thoughts about the book authored by K A Beena. In her valedictory speech, Beena recounted her prolonged correspondence with Basheer and the freedom she enjoyed in his home as a young girl. Shailaja P Ambu presented an impressive stage adaptation of Basheer’s famed short story, ‘Ente uppupak oru ana undarnnu’ under the direction of Sam  George.

“There are so many issues relating to medical tourism and because the area is developing so quickly it’s becoming essential that hospitals, insurers and policy makers, to name a few work together closely to streamline processes to cater to this market. Thumbay Hospitals and SNTTA have strategically partnered to assist and offer world-class services at affordable prices to international patients and guests and to look after all their needs whilst in the UAE. We understand the changing dynamics medical tourism and we are learning to adapt, says Dr Benazir Ameer Ali, director Thumbay medical and health tourism department.

The partnership will help Thumbay Hospital to extend its reach and market worldwide to prospective patients. This partnership will leave Thumbay Hospital to concentrate on its commitment of providing world class healthcare at affordable prices. Medical tourism is now perceived as one of the fastest growing segments in healthcare. The recent trend is for patients to travel from developed countries to third world countries for medical treatment because of cost consideration, waiting time, privacy, and confidentiality, though the traditional pattern still continues. Technology will lead the way in future medical tourism. Along with that we can expect extremely personalized services, niche specialist centers, wider network of partnerships, increased number of accreditation, certifications and industry specific associations said Dr Benazir. To offer our personalized services, we are the first medical tourism provider to have opened a counter in Sharjah International Airport and we are planning to open one in Dubai International Airport soon, she added.

“Thumbay Hospitals have been at the forefront of developing the necessary infrastructure to attract medical tourists. We have a department here establishing this,” Akbar Moideen said. The international medical tourism department of Thumbay Hospitals aims to cater to an extensive number of patients and be known as the preferred hospital for medical tourism in UAE. Currently, Thumbay Hospitals receive inquiries from a wide range of clientele including hospitals, medical practitioners, partnered agents, and various inquiry forwarding websites from across the globe.

Thumbay Hospitals is aligning itself with Dubai’s Vision 2020 for medical tourism. Along with Dubai, the other Emirates of UAE are gearing up to attract more medical tourists in the near future. This would mean increasing patient requirements, higher demand for facilities and larger calls for personalization.

Looking at the current and future trends in medical tourism, Thumbay Hospital has developed enhanced facilities, maintaining highest standards of quality and offering packages with a wide range of personalization options. The medical tourism industry is going through an exciting phase where international and intra-regional activities are taking place within this sector of the health market.

Women’s Hockey: Soundarya, Rajani script history

They are the first women hockey players from AP and TS to join the Indian team, which qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Yendala Soundarya

Yendala Soundarya and Etimarpu Rajani scripted history by becoming the first-ever women hockey players from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to be members of the Indian team which qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

 Etimarpu Rajani
Etimarpu Rajani

The last time India played in Olympics was in the 1980 edition when it was given a direct entry because of the boycott led by USA in the Moscow edition.

India made it to the next edition of Olympics (for the first time after 36 years) by virtue of defeating Japan 1-0 in the play-off match for the fifth place and both Ms. Soundarya and Ms. Rajani were part of the team in the World Cup semi-final league matches in Belgium.

Ms. Soundarya says she is delighted. “This is one of the finest moments in my career. We are all so happy that our biggest dream is coming true,” said both Ms.Soundarya and Ms. Rajani in a chat with The Hindu in Belgium.

For someone who took to hockey watching seniors and playing for India since 2006, the 25-year-old Ms. Soundarya was also a member of the Indian team, which won the silver in the Senior Asia Cup and the Champions Trophy.

Ms. Soundarya says that the team was confident in today’s crucial match. “Hats off to my teammate Rani Rampal; we emerged winner. And we are in celebratory mood right now,” she said in a voice choked with joy.

“I owe my success to my first coach Maqbool in Nizamabad and then to the SAI coaches, including Gloria, at the SAI Centre in Hyderabad, where I trained for five years,” the star player recalled. “Right now, no major event is scheduled and since we have qualified for the Olympics, some events may be lined up,” she said.

“I feel honoured to play for India, coming from a place like Nizamabad (she was a student of Modern Public School) which has no history of hockey players,” Ms. Soundarya exclaims.

Achievements not a surprise

SAI hockey coach P. Madhukaran, who was earlier the Indian women’s World Cup coach, recalls the abundance of talent these girls have shown in their formative years.

“Their achievements are not a surprise to me given their commitment and sincerity to keep improving,” he says.

The 16-year-old is one of only two players representing India at the second Open Youth Deaf Tennis Cup to be held in the German city from May 28.

Communication, the lack of it, is a major handicap. But Shaik Jafreen is determined to let her tennis racket do all the talking. The 16-year-old is one of only two players from India to be selected to represent India in the second Open Youth Deaf Tennis Cup to be held in Hamburg (Germany) from May 28.

This Kurnool-born girl is expectedly keen to make optimum advantage of this “huge” opportunity, in which she is being sponsored by the GVK Foundation.

Two-time Grand Slam winner Sania Mirza had also come forward to ensure that Jafreen enjoys free training at her world-class SMTA in Murtuzaguda, thus ensuring that she hones her skills under the watchful eyes of some of the big players and coaches.

Watching pros helps

The experience of watching 10-time Grand Slam winner Cara Black, working with WTA Tour consultant Christian Fillol and Hyderabad’s very own Mirza, Jafreen feels she is learning a lot.

“Just watching these reputed personalities lifts your confidence level. The training methods might vary, but there is so much to learn, and I am lucky that I am training at SMTA,” says the young talented player, who missed out on the 2012 London Paralympics due to a communication mismanagement by the officials concerned. However, she has the satisfaction of representing India in the 2013 Deaf Olympics.

The 2012 National Deaf Champion in singles and doubles hopes that the Hamburg trip later this month should see a turn-around in her career prospects. “My ultimate goal is to win a gold in the 2017 Deaf Olympics in Turkey,” she signs offbefore joining her training session.

The lovers of history and connoisseurs of artefacts are up for a treat as the Victoria Memorial Hall is going to display for the first time a notebook belonging to Tipu Sultan, the legendary ruler of Mysore.

The notebook written in Persian (Shikasta) touches on a variety of subjects but is mainly a treatise on the art of artillery. It is divided into eight chapters with introduction dealing with certain tenets of Islam and chapters dedicated to rules for horsemen and piyada (foot soldiers) of his army.

Each page of the notebook consists of nine lines of script. Some pages bear the stamp of the three royal seals while ten sketches explain the use of muskets with details on how to load and hold them.

Sahebzada Ghulam Mohammad, one of Tipu Sultan descendants, had donated the notebook to the trustees of Victoria Memorial in 1904.

“The notebook reflects his keen interest and the first hand information on the use of arms and artillery along with the fact that he was introducing modern equipment in his armoury. In fact Tipu Sultan was one of the few great kings who died fighting,” Gholam Nabi, head of VMH documentation and photography unit told The Hindu.

Mr. Nabi said the King of Mysore who wrote in Kannada, had dictated the contents of the note book to his calligrapher who wrote it in Persian. Historians believe that Tipu Sultan was one of the first kings to have made use of rockets in war as early as 1790s.

“The artefact is going to be part of an exhibition on ‘Life and Times of Tipu Sultan’ which we have been planning for quite some time. The exhibition is likely to be held at the end of this year,” Jayanta Sengupta, the secretary and curator of VMH told The Hindu.

‘He could tell if something was wrong just by sniffing the food’

Friends and family recall their memories of Abdul Haq, the CMD of iconic city restaurant Empire

The Empire chain is well-known for its non-vegetarian food
The Empire chain is well-known for its non-vegetarian food

With 18 outlets across the city, Empire has, quite literally, lived up to its name. A crowd throngs its outlets no matter what time of day it may be, and many a large Sunday lunch and post-movie dinner run has been made in its basic-yet-clean interiors. So patrons were surprised to find that the restaurant was shut on July 1, only to discover that the empire had lost its patriarch, Chairman and Managing Director, Abdul Haq, at the age of 61.

While the restaurant continues to function under the stewardship of Haq’s brothers Kunhi Mohammed (Joint Managing Director) and Abdul Aziz (Vice Chairman), his son Shahid Haq is still grappling with the loss of his father. Haq had become synonymous with the expansion of the restaurant into a chain, from its earliest avatar as a small restaurant in Central Street, Shivaji Nagar in 1966 by his NRI father, Abdul Rahim.

“My father joined the operations in 1980. Initially he did everything from cutting chicken in the kitchen to sitting as a cashier. He had to learn the nitty-gritty of the business because my grandfather would not always be in India,” recalls Shahid. As business improved and he learnt the ropes, in 1998, Haq renovated the place, acquired adjacent shops and bought the property. He set up their first new outpost at Church Street, in 2004, “to attract the younger crowd.”

As the city grew, Empire grew with it, catering to the generation that now brought its children with it. Haq and his brothers introduced some of their signature dishes – from Chicken Kabad to Butter Chicken Gravy, Ghee Rice, Coin Paratha, and Chill Chicken. He understood the importance of modernisation, training staff to better their standard of service, updating the crockery and cutlery and introducing air-conditioning. “But he always wanted to keep the pricing reasonable no matter what,” Shahid recalls. In 1997, they introduced the Non-veg Thali; in 2008 the non-veg buffet. Along with the Dosa Chicken, (“Dosa was a common food but he wanted to make it about our gravy”), it helped cement Empire’s place in the city’s foodscape.

Controversy dogged him when in 2012, he allegedly ran over Selvaraj, a 50-year-old construction labourer from Dharmapuri in Tamil Nadu, who was sleeping on the pavement on Kamaraj Road. Selvaraj’s right leg had to be amputated after the accident.

Although Haq was accused of being inebriated, the claim was rubbished by the then Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) MA Saleem, and Haq footed the bill for Selvaraj’s treatment.

While Shahid remembers him as a man who was always stressed that he was not doing enough for the brand, crunching numbers in his mind, it seems he need not have worried so much.

Shahid will now have to cultivate his father’s keen sense of smell and taste – that enabled him to find the flaws in his food just by sniffing it.
