Standing tall in the face of adversity

Visually challenged student bags Young Achiever Award.

As far as fielding positions in cricket are concerned, J. Shahjahan prefers standing at ‘short.’ “You know, where Gautam Gambhir normally stands,” he said, a comparison he often draws to help those not so well-versed with cricket parlance. This is a place uncomfortably close to the batsman, one that even the fittest of players would not be too thrilled to serve. But this 26-year-old captain of the Kerala University Blind Cricket team is.

Mr. Shahjahan, whose indomitable spirit for the game has also found him a place in the State-level team for the visually challenged, is one of the five recipients in the country of this year’s Young Achiever Award instituted by the Amway Opportunity Foundation. The award was introduced in 2013 by the Corporate Social Responsibility wing of Amway India with the objective of identifying and supporting efforts of youth who are differently abled and belong to financially underprivileged backgrounds. He will receive the award at a function to be held in Chandigarh on November 8.

The National Association for the Blind in Kerala nominated his name for the award.

Born partially sighted, his condition worsened with age. But it has not been a deterrent to Mr. Shahjahan’s efforts to succeed. It is not just the joy of playing that gets this ‘all-rounder’ out on the cricket pitch at the university hostel here, but the fact that it has proven really uplifting for everyone in his team, nearly all of whom have had to deal with condescending, discriminatory treatment all their lives.

Even if they get to seriously practice only once a month, it is something they excel in. “If we could, we would get out on to the pitch everyday but any tournament we participate in or any practice we arrange has to be carried out using our own money. We have never had sponsors to support us,” said Mr. Shahjahan.

“It is not our physical capabilities that have frustrated us, it is the system,” he said. Mr. Shahjahan’s two role-models in the game are barely recognisable names — A. Manish and M.T. Manoj, who excelled in the national team for the Blind Cricket World Cup held in Islamabad in 2006.

Mr. Shahjahan is currently pursuing MA Malayalam at University College here.

Young boxers from Guntur district win laurels

Young boxers from the district have won laurels at the State-level boxing championship conducted by the School Games Federation of India in Visakhapatnam. Trained by national level boxing champion and coach R. Viswanath, K. Karthik (91 kg) and A.K. Divya (69) won gold medals in boys and girls (under-19 category) sections while Sk. Yasin (81 kg), and B. Srilatha (48) have won silver medals. The girls have also secured runners up championship.

Complimenting the young boxers at a felicitation function held at LVR & Sons Club here on Thursday, Deputy Commissioner of Excise Kullayappa said that young boxers achieved so much in spite of having poor facilities and added they needed encouragement to excel in the sport and promised all help.

Secretary of LVR & Sons Club Movva Chandramouli said that the club has been extending all help to budding sports persons. The budding boxers have been allowed to use the facilities in the gymnasium where they fine tuned their abilities under boxing coach R. Viswanath.

Guntur District Boxing Association secretary Venugopal, Assistant Commissioner of Excise Adiseshu, vice- president Kosana Venkateswara Rao and School Games Federation secretary Murali were present.

Seeking the assistance of various members in providing a boxing ring, Mr. Venugopal said that the Guntur Municipal Corporation had already allotted site opposite tennis court complex at NTR Municipal Stadium and sought the approval by the commissioner. Cotton Association president Pavuluri Krishna Kumari promised that he would speak to the Sports Minister and get the required boxing ring.

Visvesvaraya, former VC, University of Roorkee.

Delivering the 5th Graduation Day address of Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) at its premises in Manasagangotri here this morning, he said “As you leave the portals of this college and enter your professional life you must remember that you are greatly indebted to the society, your alma matter, your teachers and your parents. It is your sacrosanct duty to pay back these debts.”

Stating that each of the graduates have pursued and completed their course in selected branch of engineering and became a graduate or a post-graduate, H.C. Visvesvaraya said: “generally engineering graduates and post-graduates have wide choice of possible careers before them.”

Dwelling on the role of engineering, Dr. Visvesvaraya said that engineering converts the resources available in nature into actual goods and services needed by the society giving due weightage to all the parameters involved whether they be scientific, economic, social, technological, ethical management or even political realms by properly synthesising them towards a realistic and optimal solution in each case in the best interests of the society.

As many as 878 students received BE degrees, 206 received M. Tech, 60 received MCA degree and 91 received their MBA degrees during the 5th Graduation Day ceremony.

Valley’s first online book store inaugurated

Kashmir Book Trust Pvt Ltd today inaugurated its first online book store by the name “Online Book Store”.

The book store was inaugurated by Kashmir University Chief librarian AM Baba, Deputy Director, DIQA Showket Shafi and Director, Centre for Career Planning and Councelling Farooq Ahmad Khan at second floor Auqaf complex opposite Sir Syed Gate, Kashmir University.

During the inaugural function AM Baba while applauding the initiative said, “To have online book stores is the need of the hour. During the recent devastating floods many rare books were washed away, they would have been saved, had we made online editions of these books”.

“We started this endeavour in order to give an extra edge in education system in Kashmir keeping in view the various problems the Valley students face, who don’t have easy asses to subscribe e books. The students, who hail from far flung areas can also avail benefit from our free door to door delivery system”, said Sameer Nazeer and Mudasir Ahmad, Managing partners of Online Book Store.

Life time Achievement award for Mammootty

Megastar of M’Town, Mammootty has won the Lifetime Achievement Award in Kashmir Film Festival, 2014 for his contribution to Indian Cinema. Also his movie Balyakalasakhi, won its director Pramod Payyannur the award for the best director and script.

Meanwhile, Jordan movie ‘When Monalisa Smiled’ has been adjudged the best film and the Turkish movie Spring is Rebellious, won the award for the second best film in the feature.

The heroes of the first test victory at the historic venue came together to mark this milestone

The duo of former cricketers Salim Durani and Chandu Borde — architects of India’s maiden test victory at the Eden Gardens – Thursday came together to launch a book marking the 150 years of the iconic cricket stadium.

The launch of “Eden Gardens, Legend & Romance”, penned by former Bengal cricketer Raju Mukherjee, was part of series of events by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) to mark the occasion.

The book covers the entire journey of the ground, which came into existence as the Auckland Circus Gardens named after the then governor—general to its modern day existence.

The celebrations by the CAB included launch of a special gold coin, felicitating 150 oldest members of the CAB as well as the M.A.K. Pataudi Memorial Lecture by former India great V.V.S. Laxman.

Taking a trip down memory lane, Durani and Borde who scripted India’s memorable 187 victory against England in 1961—62, regaled tales of their association with Eden – which they described as dream ground of every cricketer.

Durani said he become a cricketer only because of the Eden Gardens where he first played as a school cricketer in 1949.

I wouldn’t have been cricketer but for Eden Gardens where my performances help me get into the Ranji team and then in the national team. Playing at Eden along with Lord’s is dream of every cricketer. There remains an emptiness if you haven’t played here,

On the occasion, “Eternal Eden” a documentary chronicling the historic journey of the ground which besides cricket greats of several generations, witnessed football legend Pele in action in 1977 playing for the New York Cosmos against Mohun Bagan in exhibition tie.

Talking about his memories of the ground, Borde singled out the appreciative but intimidating Eden crowd.

“Playing against Bengal at the Eden Gardens always used to be challenge besides being a good team they had backing of the crowd which was intimidating for the opponents,” said Borde who said the crowd turning riotous during the 1966–67 West Indies tour has remain etched in his memory.

“The way West Indian players were running back to the team hotel, they must have broken several Olympic records,” said Borde with a chuckle.

Several former cricketers including ex–India captain and CAB joint secretary Sourav Ganguly were also present on the occasion.

108 Probationers take part in Passing Out Parade at city jail

The passing out parade of the 42nd batch of probationers was held at the City Central Jail Parade Ground here this morning.

The 108 probationers, all men, underwent a 9-month training at the Prison Staff Training Institute here.

ADGP (Prisons) K.V. Gagandeep received the guard of honour from the passing out probationers.

Speaking on the occasion, Gagandeep said recruitment of 250 jail warders is underway. CCTV cameras will soon be installed in the city jail and measures have been initiated to computerise all jail operations in the State, the ADGP said and advised the successful probationers to work with conviction and confidence.

Speakers appeal to the youth to follow in the footsteps of the great leaders

Civil society activists, people’s representatives and district officials took part enthusiastically in the ‘Vande Gandhiyam’ peace rally which was organised from Gandhi statue in Nellore city to Pallepadu Ashram near here on Sunday.

Singer Ghazal Srinivas, MP Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy, Mayor Sk. Abdul Aziz, Nellore Town MLA P. Anilkumar Yadav and several other leaders and youth were present on the occasion. The event was organised to pay tributes to the values and ideals cherished by Mahatma Gandhi who stood out as a unique world leader by winning freedom through peace and non-violence.

District Collector N. Srikanth, who flagged off the rally in the city, said that the peace march would go a long way in drawing wide attention to the Gandhian principles that brought special recognition to the country. He said that the Pallepadu Gandhi Ashram was among the few important ashrams which were being preserved as a tribute to Gandhi.

Ghazal Srinivas led the march and underlined the significance of peace in bringing about harmony and unity among the countries of the world. He said that he had toured many parts of the world in the propagation of world peace. Calling upon the active participation of all sections of society, the speakers appealed to the youth to follow in the footsteps of the great leaders who fought for the independence of the country in those days. They said that it was everybody’s responsibility to protect and preserve the unity and integrity of the country.
