Shazia Ilmi among 10 BJP leaders appointed by Centre as independent directors in top PSUs

Kanpur, UTTAR PRADESH / NEW DELHI :

At least 10 politicians affiliated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party have been appointed as independent directors on the board of top public sector firms.

Among those who feature in the list of directors appointed by NDA last week, are BJP’s Delhi unit Vice President Shazia Ilmi, Gujarat IT cell convenor Rajika Kacheria; minority face of the BJP in Gujarat Asifa Khan; former BJP MLA candidate from Odisha Surama Padhy and former Bihar MLC Kiran Ghai Sinha, reports Indian Express.

These politicians have found themselves on the boards of Navaratna PSUs that include Engineers India Ltd (EIL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) and the National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO).

While Ilmi, a former journalist has been appointed an independent director at Engineers India Ltd, Kacheria, a cosmetologist by profession, has been named the head of Cotton Corporation of India Ltd.

Also, while Kiran Ghai Sinha has been listed as an independent director of the National Aluminium Company, Asifa Khan will be on the board of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd.

Former BJP MLA candidate from Odisha Surama Padhy has been given a position on the board of Bharat Heavy Electricals; and BJP’s Karnataka unit secretary Bharathi Magdum will serve on the state trading board.

Sazia Ilmi is a prominent member of Team Anna and one of the beautiful faces in the Indian Media. A Former Anchor in Star TV and  a noted  Journalist, she is now the urbane, Muslim, media-savvy face of Team Anna.

Born in 1970 to a middle class Muslim Family in Kanpur, she did her schooling from St. Mary’s in Kanpur and Nainital and college from St. Bede’s, Shimla.

Her Father was  the founder-editor of the oldest and largest-selling Urdu daily from Kanpur, Siyasat Jadid.

The youngest in a family of four brothers and two sisters, she was expected to marry comfortably and settle down or at best (since she was academically bright) become an IAS officer. But as she puts it, “When you have so many problems with the system, how can you become a part of it? Freedom is not economic alone, it is the freedom to make a choice and do what you want to from your heart.”

She is married to an investment banker Sajid Mallik, half-Gujarati Muslim and half-Tamil Iyer, Shazia is emotionally dependent upon her extremely supportive husband.  For her famous women like Kalpana Chawla and Kiran Bedi are source of Inspiration and possibly this is the reason she joined Team Anna.

She is the Media Face for Team Anna. Whether it is Press Briefing or Television Debates it is Sazia who plays a prominent role.  Being on TV is Ilmi’s core competence. She has done it for 15 years, as political correspondent and news anchor. Sometime in 2010, she contracted a condition prevalent among working journalists of a certain vintage—a crisis of purpose. “I was done with mouthing inanities night after night,” Ilmi says.

She also plays her familiarity with Delhi’s media and political class to Team Anna’s advantage. Many decision makers in TV newsrooms are friends, former colleagues, or were fellow beat reporters. “I understand how the system works. And I know the media well. I have seen all the power broking and the wheeling-dealing,” she says.

Recently she was  nominated to be part of a media contingent travelling with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Mexico and Brazil but the proposal was withdrawn amid opposition from her brother.

Shazia Ilmi launches AAP awareness campaign in Namma Bengaluru

Bangalore :

The Door to Door campaign of Aam Aadmi Party’s “Mane Manege Aam Aadmi, Mane Maneyalli Aam Aadmi” was successfully launched today in Shivaji Nagar, Bangalore, by party’s national executive member Shazia Ilmi.

Shazia launched the campaign from Russell Market in Shivaji Nagar area in the presence of party functionaries and local citizens of the area. She started the campaign by talking to the shopkeepers of Russell market understanding their problems and also explaining them the vision of the party.

During the event, Shazia also addressed the public and volunteers and talked about the urgent need of transforming the governance of the nation before it gets too late.

She emphasized that Aam Aadmi Party is the platform available to the citizens to improve the model of governance delivery.

Shazia further went to the shops and residential areas in the locality and canvassed about the party’s vision and the model of ‘Swaraj’.

She also asked the people to join the revolution called “Aam Aadmi Party”. People from the area were very enthusiastic about the party and wished for its success.

During her campaign, Shazia received special blessings from the elders and women of the locality for the success of Aam Aadmi Party in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

Later, she went to a nearby Dargah to offer prayers for the success of the party.
