MEASI donates Rs 50 lakh to CM relief fund

Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, who is also the President of MEASI, spoke to Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami

The Muslim Educational Association of Southern India (MEASI), the parent body of The New College, Chennai, has contributed ₹50 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund towards meeting the challenge of tackling COVID-19 pandemic.

Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, who is also the President of MEASI, spoke to Chief Minister Edapaddi K. Palaniswami over phone on Wednesday, and requested him to accept the offer from a minority educational institution, according to a release.

MEASI honorary secretary T. Rafeeq Ahmed and treasurer Elias Sait assisted Mr. Ali in raising the fund.

Will include excerpts from the former Advocate General’s memoirs

Jurist Habibulla Badsha was an amazing person and he always did what he thought was right, Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Group of Hospitals, said on Sunday.

Speaking at the launch of the book ‘When Mercy Seasons Justice’ – The Life and Times of Habibullah Badsha authored by historian V. Sriram, he recalled how they had met in the 1950s as college students.

“It was for an event in which the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was to address students. I had chosen the Presidency College grounds and I went to meet their chairman and it turned out to be Badsha, and that was the beginning of a life long relationship,” he recalled. The former Advocate General was also a founder-director of the Apollo Hospitals.

Recalling his long association with Badsha, Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali said that on many occasions, he had fought cases for free for clients who could not afford any fees.

Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court R. Sudhakar recalled how his guru’s home was always open to friends and family.

He said Badsha and his wife were a couple who should be emulated and added that their home was witness to many an intellectual discussion.

Mr. Sriram said he had used large passages from Badsha’s memoirs in the book. His memoirs reflected the life of the Muslim community and the anguish they felt during Partition.

Prince of Arcot elected prez of MEASI

The Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, has been elected unopposed as president of Muslim Educational Association of Southern India (MEASI), the parent body of New College (autonomous), Royapettah.

The Prince, who was elected during the 115th annual general body meeting of MEASI, will serve as president for three years.

Abdul Ali succeeded U M Khalilullah, a senior chartered accountant who served MEASI as its honorary secretary and president for two terms.

Apart from New College, MEASI also administers MEASI Academy of Architecture, Institute of Management, Institute of Information Technology and College of Education and Chartered Accountant Academy among others. MEASI, a pioneer educational Institution in Tamil Nadu, has a strength of 6,000 members on its roll.

T Rafeeq Ahmed, an educationist and a businessman, and Elias Sait, a chartered accountant, were elected honorary secretary and treasurer respectively, along with other office-bearers and executive committee members. tnn

Prince of Arcot hails CM’s sanction for Kalas Mahal

Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammad Abdul Ali, has hailed Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for sanctioning a sum of Rs14.5 crore for the restoration of the Chepauk Palace (Kalas Mahal).

In a release, the Nawab said that the people of Tamil Nadu, particularly those who have love for history and interest in preserving historical monuments, were overwhelmed by the Chief Minister’s gesture to restore the majestic Kalas Mahal, which is perhaps the first Indo-Saracenic monument in the country.

The Nawab thanked the Chief Minister for her decision not to demolish the historic Kalas Mahal, which was ravaged by a fire in January 2012. That the CM evinced keen interest to restore it, shows her concern and love for history.

The Prince hoped the restoration would be carried out as per detailed drawings provided by a firm belonging to a conservation architect and that the  originality of the structure would be maintained.

Kalas Mahal is classified as a grade-I heritage building in the Justice E. Padmanabhan committee report

The direct descendant of the eighth Nawab of Carnatic, Muhammad Ali Wallajah (1749 to 1795), built the Kalas Mahal.
